No Smoking

These engines should burn very clean at 3400 rpm, below that then the turbos are not working at there best, I think from memory my friends Targa 33 with the same engines which I have just overhauled has A6 duoprops, my last but short time length boat was a Birchwood ts34 this had A5 duoprops on and reached 3800 no problem, I think A7 are too overpitched, also stainless props give slightly less speed but last a lot longer than alloy ones, if the engines are in reasonable condition then I think this may be your problem, although I could give you a whole list of what could cause smoking on a 200 volvo 41A/B series engine.

Re: fuel additives

Somehow I think you've got my boat mixed up with another one!! Mine doesn't smoke (neither do I) and I'm a awful long way from the channel!

A7's are quite high for this boat, but if you are getting 3800 rpm with a clean boat they may be OK. I have a Nimbus 35Fly with the same engines, and treat 1800 to 3000 rpm as accelerating speeds only. These engines don't have much low torque and the duo props make matters worse.
Were the injectors newly tipped or serviced. Also they will carbon up rapidly if you are still smoking and may need cleaning again soon, ensure the nozzle holes are cleaned ultrasonically.
I go along with ensuring the engine room is well ventilated, (and cool enough) you are using over 210 ltrs of air every second at 3500rpm
Ensure the turbo intakes and outlet pipe to the intercooler, and intercooler are clean, they do collect oil vapor from the engine breather. You may even have to remove the turbo compressor cover and clean the inlet turbine, be careful, they are soft and easily damaged, but this can be done without removing the turbo's given reasonable access.
other than that, fit a mast !!!

surely if htere is insufficent air for combusionn on acceleration the top end will suffer even more?
ie. if the boat pulls full revs with what are considered appropriate props then it is unlikely to have an air restriction problem?
I ask because I also get black smoke (unburnt fuel) on initial acceleration from my 230 Yanmar on a B3 leg, but only as the boat moves through the resistance hump. I sort of accept it as normal for a turbo diesel that doesn't have fancy electronics to control fuel flow.
