No Smoking

Any ideas to stop black smoke and soot ruining a good day out on the water.I have a fairline Targa 33 with a pair of Volvo AD41`s. 200h.p. each with A7 duo props.I have fitted brand new props, new set of injectors, new air filters. The engines don`t smoke when out of gear even when reved to maximun.Getting up on the plane creates a cloud of black smoke,(far worse than Thomas the tank engine). When at cruising speed a black haze can be seen.Could it be faulty turbo`s or would fitting A6 props solve the problem?Any ideas what could be the cause.? I`m running out of boat cleaner ,fast.

Your are not burning your fuel properly under load. Double dose with Soltron and add regulary should help the problem. ChrisP freind Alan had same problem and recently cured, Hayden (hlb) also had similar experience, now cured.

Need any more info on it let me know. MBM test coming up soon.

First things to check:

a) are engines reaching maximum rpm at wide open throttle (ie 3,800rpm). If not, it is likely you are over-propped if engines are in reasonable health. That would give you smoke from over-fuelling as the load comes on.

b) have you tried running with the engine hatches cracked open? Care needed when doing this but point is to check there is enough air entering engineroom. Quite a few motorboats of the Targa 33 era had inadequate ventilation...the 200hp shaftdrive Corniche being a case in point. Not enough air = poor combustion. Again, not a problem at idle; the smoke will happen on acceleration.

Incidentally, these problems would be made worse if you are based in a warm climate or were trying on a hot summer's day.

Your problems dont seem to be the same a mine. Mine only smoked on start up. Blanked out most of Plymouth!. Yours seem to be more like engine overload for what ever reason. like Kim says. Try some new filters for a start.

No one can force me to come here-----------

Re: fuel additives

No! Not the usual rant.

The nice man who fixed loads of things on our boat also recommneded some additives. He had Fuelset. The manual recommends something Bak..??
The engine didn't smoke before and didn't smoke afterwards so not very conclusive in this example...

Re: fuel additives

Fuelset is very, very good stuff, you should have seen the state of the fuel in my tanks before I started using it, now I put it in everytime I fill up, but I've run out right now, will need to get some more, mind you won't need to top my tanks up until the winter. To be honest I think it's basically very similar stuff as solly, even Dom said it was good.

I spent last weekend removing, cleaning and replacing the intercooler on my 32 year old Ford Sabre 180.

The cooler tube stack was absolutely caked in oil muck drawn in from the crankcase breather.

She runs like a dream now and I can see where I've been - a totally clean exhaust at full throttle.

I just filled the cooler up with Jizer, left it overnight and then washed it out the next morning.

Re: fuel additives

They did Hamble to Cherbourg > Guernsey>Sark>Jersey>Salcombe( met school of dolphin's mid channel)>Weymouth>Poole>Hamble...we're in Poole so didnt do the Hamble bits.

12 days on board a 30 footer with 3 kids on board was quite enough and having a single diesel means we bring up the rear which is normally fine unless your behind smokey joe.

We had to write numbers on the kids shirts to recognise them cos they all resembled Al Johnson, the inhabitants of the CI's must have thought they were being invaded again.

good time though .... :)
