A friend today told me he was reading an artical in the paper saying now Father Christmas like Nativity plays is under threat! He added that he could not finish reading the story before throwing the paper down through rage and disgust.

This evening whilst driving around Gants Hill roundabout, Ilford. I noticed a huge Jewish Hanukkah symbol erected in the centre! Yet we as Brits can no longer if we desired to, display a Crib in public as it would offend the Muslim faith.

Could someone educate me on why I am feeling confused with this screwed up country of ours?

To be Honest with you Mike I was driving my 4x4 and had it not been so busy, that huge Jewish symbol would have been scattered in pieces down the A127!

Its not so much being racist woof, its just that everyone else in our screwed up country can practically do what they want, why we have to take a back seat and sit back being dictated to and reminded what we cannot do!

If that was the Crucifix at Easter there would probably be a protest march.

Re: No More Santa! Strange Identity Anyway

With a name forming an anagram of Satan, Santa, the big fat git in the red fairy suit, ('invented' by Coca Cola) is coming up for semi-redundancy.

However, before we all rush out and start kicking over other symbols of faith, fantasy or foolishness, perhaps we would do well to consider, what it is that we want in our society in the first place.

Democratic Government is meant to represent the people and be answerable to the people. If laws are passed by idiots who do not represent the view of the people, who is it that will remove them from power or replace them? You? Me? Can I be bothered? Hardly! Can anyone? Herein lies the rotten truth at heart of this once great nation, infected with the greatest surge of apathy and indifference probably ever known.

It all boils down to this. If you can not be bothered to DO SOMETHING about it, THEN WHY SHOULD I? Trouble is, as ordinary people feel the frustration and disenfranchisement from the state and towards Government (and it's collective worth,) just about anybody else becomes a target for that frustration, 'to be vented upon', as is clear in your post.

C'mon.....Chill out folks, we could consider trying to put CHRIST back into Christmas and if that's a real struggle, at least try to understand why it might seem that the other faiths are surging (and gaining advantage) when there is obviously a post-Christian vacuum, in modern brit land. Something in morals is broken in this country and after the nation wakes up out of denial, it will need fixing. Happy Holy CHRISTmas To ALL

Re: No More Santa! Strange Identity Anyway

Why should we put the mythical creation Christ, into an otherwise enjoyable holiday (other than historical and glib creationist arguements), and why are people so fixated on religions. It's a worthwhile crutch for those that need to believe, but doesn't need to be hoisted on the rest of us

As an apparant fan of anagrams indicating outcomes, you will of course be able to enlighten us as to what the future of your God is (God is an anagram of dog, and dog is also God spelt backwards which must infer some even more important meaning).

It\'s not only here . .

This is a "cut & paste" of a message from an old school mate who now lives near Toronto -

Subject: FW: Do you agree???

Think about it ... All I have to say is, when will they do something about MY RIGHTS?

I celebrate Christmas, but because it isn't celebrated by everyone, we should no longer say Merry Christmas, now it has to be Season's Greetings.

It's not Christmas vacation, it's Winter Break. Isn't it amazing how this winter break ALWAYS occurs over the Christmas holiday?

We've gone so far the other way, bent over backwards to not offend anyone, that I am now being offended. But it seems that no one has a problem with that.>

The article that follows says it all ! This is an editorial written by a Canadian citizen, published in a Canadian newspaper. He has expressed his personal feelings very well.

See if you agree.

Immigrants, not resident Canadians, must adapt!

I'm tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual, or their culture. I'm not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to Canada. Our population is almost entirely made up of descendants of immigrants. However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand.

This idea of Canada being a multicultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Canadians, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials, and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom. We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, French, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language!

We are, in the main, Christians, not Buddhists, Muslims or Islamic because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.

If the Maple Leaf offends you, then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. This is OUR COUNTRY, our land, and our lifestyle. Our government gives every citizen the right to express his opinion and we will allow you every opportunity to do so. But once you are done complaining, whining and griping about our flag, our pledge, our national motto, or our way of life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Canadian freedom, THE RIGHT TO LEAVE.

If you agree with this message -- pass it along to your friends; if you don't agree with this message -- simply delete it!

I figure if we all keep passing this to our friends it will also, sooner or later get back to the complainers. Let us all try to help our country remain our country.

Re: No More Santa! Strange Identity Anyway

Point about christmas, is we need a big party and some self indulgence in the dark of winter, to celebrate the newly lengthening days (no, it will not get dark earlier and earlier until the sun completely fails to appear at all), use up the perishables, and fortify ourselves before the hard reality of January. Long haul to easter after.

Clever church used this, used JC ( a radical humanist) and terrified us with tales of fire and brimstone, thus gaining control over the great unwashed. Now we have bathrooms, perhaps it is not suprising that the religous content is falling away.

Re: No More Santa! Strange Identity Anyway

Oh my goodness! You should not be allowed to have Santa visit in winter cos here it is summer when he visits. Cos it is summer here we cannot comfortably stuff ourselves with all the good food goodies that you can in winter.

So I insist that Santa and Christmas be henceforth banned so that I will not feel prejudiced against.

(In case it is not obvious to some, /forums/images/icons/smile.gif).

Re: No More Santa! Strange Identity Anyway

"we could consider trying to put CHRIST back into Christmas"........Oh Christ! Is it that time of year already?...........How's that? Not that I'm humbug or anything. Its just christmas has turned into another commercialised event like the rest of the so called religious holidays! Roll on easter at least I get to eat the kids eggs.

Re: It\'s not only here . .

To put it a different way, if I went to live in another country with a different language and culture, I would expect to learn the language and fit in with that culture, because it would be the difference in culture I moved for- take France as an example. Unfortunately, some British are just as bad as people moving here, and form their own English enclaves abroad and expect the locals to accept it. I feel some ex pats are just as bad in their own way.
(I said some)

Just enjoy it.

Re: It\'s not only here . .

Totally agree with you. I did an exchange job in a foreign country ans was expected to mix in with the other brits in their ex-pat community. Personnally I was more interested in meeting people from the country we were in and learning more about their lifestyle and culture.

Is this really happening? I'm not so sure.

Last week I went to see a play done by the top two years at the Primary School where my kids go. It ended up with a nativity scene and, without being doctrinaire about it, conveyed a basically Christian message. It's true that my kids also learn about other religions at school, and enjoy lecturing me about the significance of Diwali and Yom Kippur, but this doesn't particularly bother me, I'm just glad that they are getting the opportunity to learn things that I never did, though I question the wisdom of filling their heads with mediaeval superstitions.

I have no particular time for religion, organised or otherwise, and at best I am an agnostic, but the Church of England is still the established religion of Great Britain, and I suspect that some of the stories that go the rounds about the nativity being banished from the classroom are urban myths, or stem from the efforts of schools in multicultural areas to convey the breadth of religious beliefs amongst their pupils.

Re: It\'s not only here . .

Re all this Canadian "We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, French, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. "

Strange, but I thought French was the main official language in a significant part of Canada.

IMHO I think there are some sad people who really have difficulty understanding that their fantasy childhood Arcadia of the 40s and 50s, when everything was so perfect, simply doesn't exist. And doing damage to your blood pressure isn't going to help.

In the last couple of weeks, we've had rants on these forums going on about "Season's Greetings" instead of Merry Christmas, being forced to deny Christian heritage, being threatened by other languages/cultures etc etc.

Come on guys, get real, this is twaddle. I am not aware of being forced to accept any religion, language, culture etc. What cards you buy/send are simply a matter of personal choice. And I cannot see how intolerance of Islam, Judaism or any other religion benefits those who do not share these faiths.

Get a life, I say.

Sooner the boat's back in the water the better.

Just another irrelevant footnote.

Re: It\'s not only here . .

I don't think its a case of religion so much, but traditional values that are disappearing as our country now is being overturned by those whom insist on imposing thier own traditions etc. If myself were to settle in another country I would abide by thier laws and wear clothes that were acceptable to thier culture in order to fit in.

I think really the point that I am making, we in the UK are a soft touch and an easy target to those who want to stamp their authority as new residents to our country, knowing that we won't do sod all about things and just sit on our arses and turn the other cheek!

I noticed a funny logo on a rear number plate today.....it had a union jack and the words 'Great Britain' on it. Not any more!

Re: Brendan Wake Up!

When you arrive at them, please share with us the answers to your own questions!

In the meantime, have a Holy, Happy, Christmas. Which as well you know, should never to be confused with drunken, licentious wickedness, 'par for the course' at this time of the year.

Re: Ships cat My God The Future A DOG

My God? My God is still being discovered daily in the simple things of thoughts or actions in all that I (and others) do and say.

The future..... only GOD knows! I am pretty sure though that my God wants 'building up' and 'creation' to be centre stage to anything I may do in my life, not destruction, envy greed, etc.

A Dog. Rather ironically, for my rant with anagrams with the english language, they say a dog is a man's (and a women's of course!) best friend.......! Perhaps God should be also? But every man and women is, and always has been, free to choose which path to accept. Jesus, the Christ (oh no not again can you leave him outta this, it's christmas) is the story still unfolding and still we are invited to make the right choice.
