Sounds like a corrupted driver. Assuming you are using Windows, go to Control Panel, and open 'Modems' This should list any modems installed on your machine. If nothing appears, or it doesnt solve it, go to the 'System' heading in Control Panel, and open 'Device Manager'. You get a list of all the various hardware bits. Click on Modems, and there will be links to the help files for sorting it.

Otherwise - possibly easier - in Control Panel click on 'Add/delete programmes' find the modem in the list and delete it, then re-install it from scratch.

Quite a common sort of problem with Modems possibly caused by another bit of software trying to use the same comms port and overriding the modem.

If none of this works, you still have probs and are not sure what to do - its off to your friendly local 'Confuser speshulist', plastic in hand!

regularly happens to me with the usb broadband modem. if it doesn't sort itself out, unplug the modem from the usb port and re-boot then re-connect. the usb discovers a 'new' device and sets it up for you. failing that you'll need to re-install the driver.
