Hi I wonder if anyone else in TURKISH waters has the same problems as we have.

On the VHF SILVA S15 the GPS states "no position" it is a DSC so we would have to manualy put the position in.

It worked OK before. We have other GPS so know our position,

Is the "other GPS" the one that's feeding the radio? If so then it looks like the connection between the two has broken down. Otherwise it could be that, or it could be that whatever GPS does feed the radio is not working.

Pete

I had this problem a while ago on a charter boat. Turned out some fat lump was sitting on the gps mushroom which was flush mounted on deck

My question is------------Does any one else have or has had this problem????????

Peter

I think what Pete meant is that if the other GPS works then the fact that you're in Turkish waters is irrelevant and it's going to be a technical issue on your boat.

Hi thanks for replies.

The Sat Nav is working. It's just the other info to the DSC that is lacking. I thought/think it is because we are in TURKISH waters?

I just dont know. Any ideas.

Definitely nothing to do with location, it sounds like your NMEA wiring is broken as Pete said.

Nothing at all to do with being in Turkish waters or anywhere else. If the other GPS is working then there is a GPS signal from enough satelites and your problem has to be either the connection from GPS to radio, or a fault in the radio itself. Most likely the former.

Good point. Either way it's very easy to fix and I'd recommend doing the research rather than getting a whiz kid in.

If my memory is OK I think it is the blue wire that carries the NMEA GPS position to your radio, so I would check that first. As others have said if your main GPS is Ok it is nothing to do with your location.

I had a Silva S15 on a previous boat, and to be honest it proved very unreliable. The VHF side worked OK but the GPS and Navtex had software problems. I had two sets replaced free of charge by Silva. I would think about getting shot of it and buying an Icom.... much more reliable.

This assumes the Turks or a neighbour (Syria?) are not jamming it.

The MOD were testing this technology last winter in the North Atlantic, probably as a terrorist countermeasure. I'd put money on HMS Ocean having it...

Missed the 'we have other gps.."

So it is a connection problem after all or a fault with the equipment, whereas in his original post he seemed to think it was something to do with being in Turkish waters! Or that's how it read... lost in translation?

Agree it's nothing to do with being in Turkish waters. Not clear what Peter means by having another GPS though. If they qre two completely seperate systems with seperate mushrooms it's just possible that the other one is sensitive enough to hold lock on the available signal whilst the one that's feeding the DSC isn't.

Peter, is there any other kind of display or control unit on the GPS that the VHF DSC uses or do you just have the radio on it?

Hmm that is a very interesting question. Truth is I do not know. We have two mushrooms and a seperate navtec. Which one supplies the VHF - no idea. Hence when I meet up with a fellow yachtie who is a wizzo on electronics, then a few beers will go his/her way if it can be fixed.

I am a ludite on some technical things!!

Cheers
