No chart data on Raytheon RL80 chartplotter

Can anyone help????

I have bought a second hand yacht. It is equipped with a Raytheon RL80 CRC radar/chartplotter in the saloon with a Raytheon RL70C in the cockpit. There is a hsb2 cardreader that is meant to send the chart data to both plotters. I have a card with the english channel that definately works - I had it checked in the chandlery. I have a GPS input that goes to both plotters. A few weeks ago I did turn everything on and got both a gps fix and the chart data. Now I am about to go off sailing and when I turn on the chart plotter with the card in the reader it says no chart data. I have been through the setup but cannot find the step I am obviously missing

Help would be greatfully appreciated

I have exactly the same system which functions without problem. Into which unit are you putting the card? I am pretty sure it has to be the master which I assume will be the 80
 
I have a similar setup except both units are CRC's. If it did work & doesn't now have you checked that the HSB2 cable is fully inserted & not damaged anywhere. IIRR you only need to have power to both & the cable joined for chart data to transfer; the plotter with the card in becomes "master" in that you can enter certain functions only there. The plotter with the radar input is also master for radar functions. GPS data will transfer by both Seatalk & NEMA & so this gives no indication why the chart doesn't show. I cant remember having any difficulty with my setup; it seemed pretty much plug & play.
Sorry but I cant try/play with my setup to help till possibly next weekend; let me know if you still having problems before then.
 
I am putting the card into a card widget that has slots for two cards. I am not putting the card into the plotter itself. The RL70 in the cockpit does not have a slot for a card Having read you posts I wonder if the card widget is a reader connected to the PC. The prior owner did have Raymarine software on his PC. I will put the card into the RL80 itself and see if that gives chart data. Do I have to turn off the RL80 before putting a card into its slot. I think that I may have tried the card in the RL80 itself but without turning off and then turning on

Thanks for both your prompt posts. I am off from Ipswich to Southampton tomorrow and hope to have chart data!!! I will post back. Maybe even post along the way if the wireless antenna does what it promises #!

Hmmm. I have paper charts. I have GPS. Obviously I can use the charts. However having the gadgets on board, it is frustrating not to be able to use them to their full potential

Yes, put the card directly into either slot of the 80CRC with it off; turn on & hey pesto it should work!! I havent got the "card thingy" attached to my system but I do know you can get a reader to use the chart disc on a PC - another bonus for you as I believe they are quite pricey.
This also assumes cables are connected etc....

If it doesn't work in one slot try the other; you may need to restart in between.

CRC 80 is a lovely bit of kit; excellent screen viewable in bright sunlight. I have my 80 in the cockpit & 70 below.
I dont think you will be able to view the radar on the 70 as its not a cRc (r for radar).

BTW as Helina says take some paper charts have a good trip.

Nice to hear that. Then it doesn't stop you from sailing even if you cannot get all the electronics working. I'd like to go sailing too but the sea is still frozen a month or two. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
 
Sorry weather links dont seem to work properly into the inshore area but if you go in the drop down menu you can choose Thames Estaury, North Foreland & Solent - generally quite reliable.
 
Yes, the snow is starting to melt but the catepillars where on the ice today digging the harbour deeper so I guess it still takes some time before I can put my boat in the water.

Stick'em on eBay, it'll save your frustration!

I remember once listening to Don Street who has crossed the Atlantic more times than I've crossed Oxford Street. He was very down on any sort of gadgetary, because he'd seen so many frustrated sailors who were holed-up in some port or other (Azores, Canaries, port of arrival in the Caribbean) waiting for spare parts for some non-essential bell or whistle that had stopped working.
 
You do not need the fancy bit of kit to send data from one to another through the hsb. The hsb does that its self The only thing you do need to coordinate is the software standards in each piece of kit so that the black and white one is the most recent and you only put the chips in the colour unit.

The hsb connections can be a bit finicky and the ferrites can be quite crucial.
 
I have a similar set-up. RL80C radar ect. The chartploter is in the cockpit and takes c-map chips. I can connect my laptop via serial/usb and the HSB. I get data via the usb but the cmap chart does not display on the laptop, should it? As far as the HSB2 connector, I can't seem to get that to work at all, it is supposed to allow me to use the radar in the cockpit.

I called Raymarine and asked if they could recomend someone to configure my kit properly so that everything would work together properly. they couold only provide one name and he spent a day at my boat on the phone to technical support at Raymarine as he was not familer with the Raymarine RNS software I had. It cost me £250 and he said that he left it working but I have never been able to get it working.

One of the frustraiting things is that when I get to the boat I have no internet connection so I cannot tell if I have the latest drivers/firmware etc.

If theres an answer to this problem, I would love to meet the person who can sort it out for me, but I don't to throw good money after bad.
 
Chart data on Raytheon RL80 chartplotter

I bit more advice please?

I have been sailing for a week and find that I prefer the chart to be head up rather than north up. Every time I go to settings and change to head up, the setting is back to north up when restarting the system the next day. What - if anyhting - am I doing wrong?

In addition, the display shows too\much writing for the place names (I was sailing around Mallorca). Can one turn down the detail shown?
