good morning
Fitting new DSC VHF radio at the weekend, I need to wire the Nmea from the radio to my GPS.
Is this special wire or can somebody advise on the type of wire required.

many thanks

Doesn't your GPS have a cable that contains both power and data cables? My old Garmin did when I hooked it to a Yeoman a couple of weeks ago. If if doesn't then you probably need to get a data cable for that model GPS and look at the manuals for which colours join to which.

Nmea is wired from gps into junction box as I have radar and autopliot linked
So just need to wire from radio to junction box (sounds like a 5 min job Lol)

4 minutes easy /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Sorry, thought you were asking a more basic question.

Just why do 5 minute jobs take half an hour but the job you've been putting off for three months only takes minutes? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Because you've got to get down to halfords to buy some speaker cable ....

I have miles and miles of different cables in the loft - mostly data cable, just for this sort of job

5 Minute jobs are like a "direct replacment marine part"
when are they ever the same

Fireball, now theres a idea, we have a warehouse full of data cable.

It may be a good idea to use either a shielded cable or a twisted pair for the data connection, to reduce possible interference with other equipment, e.g Navtex. A ground wire twisted around the data line from gps to radio may help if you do get any issues. At least make sure there is a fairly direct ground connection between the two. The signal currents and return path should not enclose much area for least radiation.
You probably won't notice any problems though, but navtex can be among the most susceptible if you have it. Mine was completely deafened by a mobile phone charger!
Hope that helps.
