The entrances is being dredge has we speak , we found 2.5 very close to the rocks has you enter , with a 2 mts rudder , it was touch and go being so close to the rocks . Not some think I want to do very offen , If your heading this way I would leave it a few days before visiting the harbour if your draft is over 2 mts .

I assume you're writing of Palon/Palos, Vic.
Good that they're dredging it. The rate of deposition seems to be quite slow: we found least depths of 2.8m there two years ago.
Nice spot, though. Enjoy your stay.

We'll probably be heading W on Friday after clearing out of Datca. It looks from other threads as though you'll be heading the other way. Anything we can check out for you?

Note to anyone with an old pilot book (like mine :ambivalence:): the entrance layout is much changed: the N mole now extends E of the E mole, which has been shortened. Entry is now made from the E rather than N...effectively over where the N end of the E mole used to be. The shoal area along the S quay has also been dredged, with depths of 3m or more close-to. This at least means the entrance has some protection from Meltemi seas, unlike the old layout which was evidently just as shallow.

Is it Palon that is being dredged? Back in April 2006 I sat out a stormy night in Palon harbour. I had looked at getting into the other harbour on Nisiros, but the swell was coming straight in and with a rising wind blowing in it appeared unsafe so I went back to Palon. I arrived with it blowing about 35 knots and dropped the anchor as far towards the shallow land side as I dared go with a 2 metre draft, but could not get back to the outer quay because the wind was causing the boat to swing such that I would probably have hit one of the other boats already there. A yachtsman already there had dragged alongside which only left a small gap but my anchor held and I sat up on anchor watch all night, seeing wind speeds up to 45 knots. It calmed down by morning and I let out more chain and got back to the seaward quay. I learned afterwards that I could have safely rafted to an old abandoned motorboat that was very securely anchored. When I came to leave after another night the anchor (60lb CQR) was so deeply buried that I had a real job getting it out.

I have a soft spot for Palon, and might go there later this month if it has been dredged. Please keep us posted. I know the entrance has been changed since I was there. Does anyone have a current harbour plan to post?

I read last year that the port police were strict in Palon, is that still the case. Wanted to visit for a day from Turkey then return as we do in Simi without checking out and in.
Charles

Charles this is how it was just a few days ago , NO PP in Palon well we never seen any and we was there for three days , guy on the quay offer you water and power for five Euro each ie 10Euro no other charge ( I was surprised , I guess this won't be for long ) harbour entrance keep well close to the rock we found min 2.5 , the dredger is in the middle there a small white buoy , keep it on your port so enter between buoy and rocks if you head for the middle you will hit bottom has so many did why we was there ,
Hope this helps

There was a very keen PP there for the last two seasons. He would march around the port knocking on every boat to insist they visited the office to pay. He insisted on stamping the DEKPA even when the rule was changed to monthly. When I queried this he said he didn't agree with the new instruction!

When the other PP was on duty there was no enforcement whatsoever. Late last season there was nobody there all day but a lady PP turned up about 1800 on some days, knocked on the first five or six boats for payment, ignored the rest.
