Nieuwport

The Royal Air Farce Y.C. - or you walk miles to get showers and stuff.

Royal Nieuwpoort, in the old harbour, is nearer to Lidl, or is it Aldi. But the loos etc can be a dreadful long walk

VVW very nice people, a great restaurant - eaten there lots of times, and a cool multi food and boat stuff vending machine.

which of the three marinas does the panel recommend?

The AF Yacht Club - www.wsklum.be

Cheapest of the 3.
If you're visiting they will send people to your berth to take your lines (forces kids).
V good restaurant. Unpretentious cooking (generous portions) at an affordable price.

Only minus point - furthest away from town, but IIRC they do rent out bikes for a nominal fee.

Another vote for the Airforce marina.
Friendly and helpful, good food and a quiet situation. It is a long trek into town but a short walk to Lombardsijde where you can catch the tram to the beaches or to Ostend or just have a ride.
A few years ago we had to leave the boat there due to a family emergency. The harbour-master's reaction was, "just go, we will look after your boat"
Also, just remembered, we had a haul out and scrub there for a fraction of the price in UK. The marina lifted the boat on a travel hoist and let me use the pressure washer.
Is this still the case, anyone know?

Last time I used that service (2-3 years ago) we paid 55€

Just checked their website - they still offer that service.

Lift - hold (30 min) + pressure-wash - drop

<10m <6T - €47.35
<12m <12T - €62.14
<14m <14T - €79.91

Can you access the beach on the air force yacht club side? - I have nippers to consider.

You can, but...

1. It's a bit of a walk as the nearest beach is out of bounds to the public - it's an army artillery range. Lombardsijde Bad beach is what an estate agent would call 'unspoilt'. For some amenities you would have to walk.take a bus to Westende.
2. You would be better off to take the ferry (not sure if it still runs) to the Nieuwpoort proper side.
