next weekend, westerly winds of f9 gusts to 10.
In the summer months it is one of the cheapest places to wine and dine.
 
A good alternative to anchoring in the harbour or berthing at the quay at Eufimia is to go stern-to the wall outside the harbour. The wind is then dead astern, holding is good and there are virtually no waves. A few metres in the tender puts you on the breakwater with good access to the many recommended eateries.
 
How much is a decent meal and a botle of red in these place...just on average.
and what about "supermarkets" i assume there will be village shops and such but do you guys stock up in any particular places?

Hi Ropey....generally about 30 euros for 2...one starter between 2,a main course each and a carafe of house wine . There are more expensive places,but as we are spending 5-6 weeks at a time ,we don't often splash out as much. Plenty of small local shops,a few supermarkets, food prices slightly less than in UK.
We have come across people who go to Lidl or Aldi ..in Preveza ..and stock up on all their stuff for several weeks and never visit local shops or tavernas....Wonder why they bother coming to Greece? We reckon to spend about 50 E per day for eating,drinks ,and odds & sods.
However the way the £ is falling at the mo.we may have to revise our spending...perhaps eat on the boat a bit more often..!!!!

seems not much cheaper than mallorca (away from the tourist traps).
As you say the exchange rate is the biggest problem at the moment...

The cat got hammered against the concrete in an easterly, the week later the small boats got sunk with the westerly gale. The small boats are in the N/east corner of the harbour, they simply filled with water in the short chop. I was sat in the car which was being buffeted by the gale. The spray was going over the harbour wall in the opposite direction. I have never ever seen it so bad here before, the squall lasted about 30 minutes. [ QUOTE ]

Sorry 'bout that my mistake I was thinking about somewhere else...DON'T go to Assos ..it is awful , huge waves come in all the timewhen there is anything of a wind..the holding is bad the food is poor and expensive and the villagers are cannibals.to top it all it costs about E50 per day.
 
But the taverna on the harbourside does have very fetching blue and white tables and chairs, good food and friendly cats!
 
According to" Rod the God" ,the south bay is not much better in a N/Westerly..perhaps someone can confirm this?
 
Assos is spectacular and is (was) one of the best kept secrets of the island. No Flots !
I've not yet plucked up courage to drop the hook overnight there but I have plucked up courage to rent a scooter and drive across from Sami. Interested to hear from the team if it is a viable anchorage with a bit of a meltemi blowing.
 
Yes it is true that the flots don't go there ,and I was given to understand that Charter boats are also not encouraged to visit,reason being that there can be a strong swell with N/W winds. We have experienced a swell several times here and although it was a bit disconcerting the first time,we soon got used to it. Other things to consider ..the jetty is very short,has few rings /tie on points,and has large rocks 1-2 m below the surface in places. The holding is not great,as the sea bed is very weedy. You can either anchor off or berth stern-to as normal ,but I would suggest diving down to check the clearance between rudder/and rocks,and while you are at it have a butchers at the anchor to check it is dug in to the bottom and not tangled in weeds.We have also been taken by surprise by strong gusts coming down the hill into the harbour.
Looking at the place it is very surprising how poor the shelter is,but don't let this put you off.Dig in well and you will be OK. I would not like to try to fit a flotilla in there however ..it could be chaotic.

No Meltemis in the Ionian (God, don't you just hate pedants!) but it's not a good spot to be in strong NWs; Assos definitely comes under the heading of 'fair weather' harbour and a swell rolls in for a couple of days after any blows; we even got caught out once when there'd been some heavy weather up in the Adriatic and it sent an uncomfortable slop in. If you get there and find a swell it's probably best to go back around to Fiskardo, alternatively try to tuck tight into the SW corner of the bay, or if you've a shallow draft, onto the quay as far east towards the root as you can get. As noted in another post, the bay south of the istmuth is wide open and worse than the north side.
