Anyone ever had the chance to sail one of these and know of their performance, build quality etc? Ignoring the DS windows, are they capable in heavy weather etc?

Thanks

Ok how about just the normal Nicholson 40. Any opinions there? Note that I'm a total Nicholson virgin so any advice about their build and seaworthiness would be appreciated?

Thanks

Tim

You don’t seem to be getting much of a response! I have got a nich 39 and I understand that the hull mould is the same, just a foot added. The DS was built for the Baltic market.

They are very heavy built and will certainly look after you in a blow but won’t be the quickest in light airs. Many have gone off cruising. I cant speak for the 40 but the 39 dont come onto the market very often as, like us, they fit the bill perfectly and people keep them for there boating lives.

The fit out quality is also something that is not found now and will generally last the test of time. To give you an idea, our nich 39 in 1977 was sold for £65k!

The back up service is great. The Camper and Nicholson Archivist keeps a file on every boat built by them which has been invaluable to gain information, drawings even QC reports!

Interesting since I'm looking for a boat for higher latitudes. Do you know much of the hulls in terms of insulation?

My parents had one of these in the 70's which they lived aboard for 4 months a year and cruised extensively in the Med. A very substantial boat and beautifully made. My main criticism was the flat aft deck and the small "steering " cockpit. The aft deck was rather lethal in any sea but lovely at anchor. They loved her but anno domino set in so she was sold for I think £70k+-
