Nice day on the med...from the drone

Yup I'm another saddo who's droneless too

Nice vid though!

Great video
I always seem to fly too far from the subjects.
That video has got me thinking - maybe I need to fly closer.
Thanks for posting.
Whats the drone?

Its a DJI Spark...it's a great little drone...I have a Mavic Pro Platinum too, but haven't flown it off the boat yet. The little spark is great...not as stable, not quite the video quality and lacking the range...but still produces great shots :) I like getting pretty close...I fly it quite a bit around inside my house to build up a bit of confidence lol.

I've got an old Phantom 3 and a Mavic Pro (similar to your Platinium).
I've used both over water but I always find it scary - especially when trying to get those running shots whilst the boat is under way.
JFM and Scubaman ar very good at capturing video of boats under way.

I noticed in your video that the horizon needs straightening.
My Mavic was creating video like that until last week when I investigated the problem.
I don't know if it is the same on the Spark but on my Mavic, I re-calibrated the gimbal which didn't fix the problem but there is also the ability to align the gimbal so I flew it up about 10 feet and straightened the horizon using the manual gimbal controls - it is great now.

I have had the tilted horizon for a while and I have been straightening it in the post editing process (I use KDENLive) but last week I wanted some panorama images. The idea was to make some 3D views around Devon which could be viewed using an internet browser. The DJI drones are really great at producing these images. You set the drone up to take 360 degree panorama photos and simply fly the dron to the place you want the 360 degree panorama and press the shoot button. The drone then automatically takes 34 images all around its current position. It is best to have previously set the exposure to manual and set a good average exposure for the complete 360 degrees. When you download the panorama images, the DJI GO4 app stitches all 34 images together into a single 360 degree image.

I then uploaded the imaged to imgur.com and wrote some javascript using this free package https://pannellum.org/

Here is a link to the result:-

It is best to click the "full screen" button to get a really great 3D experience.

I'm really pleased with the results and it is so easy to take the shots - a little harder to create the web page but not difficult.
All the clever stuff is done by DJI inside the drone and the DJI GO4 app.
Just thought you might find the 3D stuff interesting.

Or maybe your camera is fitted with a wide angle lens which can be changed?

Nice idea but the gimbal on my Mavic Pro is very flimsy - not like the Phantoms.
It is possible to fit Neutral Density filters but thats about it.
The new Mavic Pro 2 comes in two versions - one of which has an optical zoom.
The other has a better camera which I believe has a digital zoom.
If I ever upgrade, I would probably go for the better camera rather than the zoom one.
There are a few other features on the new Mavic Pro 2 - extra sensors etc - but the big one for me would be the ability to incorporate the new DJI controller with "built in" screen.

So, for the moment - I think I will just try and fly nearer.
I always try to make my videos end up at HD resolution (1920 x 1080) and the drone shoots 4K (3840 x 2160) so there is always scope for zooming whilst I'm post processing the video.
That said, Paul's video shows how much better the video is when shot closer.

Thanks, that's a good tip. Mine needs straightening as well. :encouragement:

As a side note, I ordered spare props for my Mavic Pro and got the low noise ones -> https://www.amazon.com/Low-Noise-Propellers-Mavic-Platinum/dp/B0775TVCHY

The material says they work best with Mavic 2, but they actually are markedly quieter on the Mavic Pro as well. If anyone needs to order spares, I can highly recommend getting these.

Impressive stuff regarding the 360 panorama!

Thanks for the tip on the props - I might get some and try them out - whenever I fly, the next door Jack Russel goes bonkers - he can hear the drone about a mile away.

Regarding the 360 degree panoramas, I think I've found an easy way of viewing your own image.
I didn't understand what Pannellum meant when they said "stand alone" in their instructions.
I've had a little play and all it means is that they have a script where you can pass your own image.
All you then need to do is to upload one of the DJI 360 degree images from your phone (tablet in my case) to a CORS server (I use imgur.com)
Click on the uploaded image in imgur.com and you can then copy the "direct link" to the image inside imgur.com
Then add the "direct link" that you copied in imgur.com to the end of this URL:-
https://cdn.pannellum.org/2.4/pannellum.htm#panorama=

In my case, my main 360 degree image has a "direct link" inside imgur.com of https://i.imgur.com/okzOf6G.jpg

So, this is the full URL that you would paste into your browser:-
https://cdn.pannellum.org/2.4/pannellum.htm#panorama=https://i.imgur.com/okzOf6G.jpg
This is the same link - the forum software truncates the full URL in its display.
https://cdn.pannellum.org/2.4/pannellum.htm#panorama=https://i.imgur.com/okzOf6G.jpg

This will then launch your 3D image in your browser.
I might not have made it very clear but once you understand it, it is dead easy.
This should be a good way of emailing someone a 3D image that you have just taken with your drone.
Just build up the full URL from this https://cdn.pannellum.org/2.4/pannellum.htm#panorama= PLUS the URL to your image in imgur.com
And put the full URL into your email.

EDIT
Or even post your DJI 360 degree image on here and make it clickable like this:-

For those who like making up BB code URLs for this forum - this is the clickable URL posted above.
[url=https://cdn.pannellum.org/2.4/pannellum.htm#panorama=https://i.imgur.com/okzOf6G.jpg][img]https://i.imgur.com/okzOf6Gl.jpg[/img][/url]

Alternatively, you can, of course just view your 3D image on your phone/tablet without any of this nonsense!!!

My Mavic has the low noise props..and yes it's pretty quiet. Where do you guys tend to land on the boat...I tried a cheap bugs on the front and it didn't handle the slope very well and each time it wanted to bounce forward and nearly landed in the water....the Spark takes off and lands from your hand, so I can just grab it while it's flying...but in the swell that was ok, but not ideal.
