Really pleased to see the article in MBM on splicing an eye into a rope. I have been waiting for someone to show me that for years. The wife and I can't wait to have a go this weekend.
(That makes us sound really sad doesnt it)
I for one would like to see more practical articles within the mag. I am sure that none of us know absolutely everything and one should always be willing to learn. The simplest of things can make boating even more pleasurable.
Anyway congrats to MBM. for a good article please can we have more.

Very easy in three strand, and very satisfying, too. Decently finished ropes just look neater on a boat. But try as I might, I can't put eye splices in bloody braid...

There used to be a little "pocket" book by Fernhurst that showed how to do eye splices longsplice and back splices with all the knots. Don't know if its still in print though.
From the eye splice you can also back splice. Instead of forming the loop. Use a crown knot instead. Then splice as if you were forming an eye. Funishes off the ends of ropes nicely.

Now hang on a minute. I have not even tried to do the easy eye splice yet.

OK, clever clogs, try a double wall and crown stopper knot then! If you can do that successfully, we'll have you relocated to the PBO forum...

I find a hot knife a whole lot easier! I can cut a mitre using a mitre block, but I still use the compound mitre chop saw and do it quicker!!!

Actually next time we meet up look at all my fender ropes. Each one has an eye splice thru the top of the fender and a back splice at the top of the rope. I was "keen" when I did them.

The problem is that it's the kind of skill that needs practice. We can struggle away at it, trying to get it look neat, or you can go to your chandler and say, "Can I have x metres of y with an eye splice in the end" and it'll be there and waiting for you and what's more it will look good.

OK, so I'm lazy.

Re: Nice...

Looked at this post expecting to find out vital details of what to wear, what are the best restuarants to be seen in and the locations of all the best shoe shops in Nice, only to find a PBO anorak cell talking about ropes.
