Update to installing Navionics on Nexus 7. It is not possible to install via the Google Play store and Navionics are not sure when they will release an app for the Nexus 7. So this is what I did. I have a licence for UK & Holland, I used Astro file manager to back up the app, transferred the backup to my Ubuntu One account and then downloaded and installed to my Nexus 7. It works, not HD, the GPS is accurate and the charts are downloaded via wifi. I had to change the settings on the security to all installation via unknown sources but have changed that back now it is installed. I don't know how it will cope with updates yet?

Good work! Thanks for the update.

I'd actually rather do this anyway - why pay twice when the improvements offered by HD seem tenuous at best, and this saves you paying twice, right?

All my apps from my phone can be downloaded to the Nexus as well, so I think it is all above board, I believe once you have bought an app you can use it on any device that is registered to your account?

Yes, if they appear in Google Play, but my understanding was that on a device with a screen size bigger than 5", Play would only show the HD version - ie; though in theory you have paid the Navionics licence and are entitled to use it on more than one device, the struggle is actually to get it on to a tablet..?

Correct, the struggle was installing on the Nexus 7, just ordered a waterproof case, hopefully I have a 7" chart plotter for around £250.00??

Once Navionics get their finger out, the Navionics app should update as normal through the play store though I see the standard Navionics UK app is not in the Play Store so I would recommend everyone to backup their app using Astro File Manager, ES File Explorer, or if rooted, Titanium Backup.

Update to installing Navionics on Nexus 7.

Brilliant. Thanks very much. Bought my Nexus yesterday and had a reply from Navionics to the effect that: -

"Please be informed that there is no information suggesting that the Navionics Mobile app will be available on this platform in the near future.

"However, we are always looking to expand to new products and platforms, so there is a chance that this will become available in the future. Unfortunately, there is no further information on this subject at this time."

So once I finally worked out all the steps - Bumblefish makes it seem easy but I struggled..... - it all went swimmingly well. So the money I've saved on a new chart plotter might just go for a wireless AIS repeater.

Hi, sorry to barge in, I've been considering buying a Google Nexus 7, for the main purpose of using Navionics. From what I have read above, I will be able to get it working, so that is good. However, I assume I will have to purchase and download the app on my Galaxy S2 , then transfer it over to the Nexus. My concern is the charts themselves - Navionics FAQ says that you can only store the charts on an SD card, is it possible to download them direct to the Nexus internal memory in your experience?
Many thanks indeed for any advice
Ian

The Maps see the internal storage as an SD card so they load without any issues. Detail is generally good but I'm looking forward to getting the HD app when it becomes available.

Google Nexus 7 - on the water

Hi

Just back from a week's cruising in the South of France. How did the Nexus perform with the Navionics software?

To begin with I downloaded every chart area I might possibly need for Navionices and it seemed to work fine - until I tried to scroll to my starting point. Then it crashed. The crashes became progressively worse until it simply wouldn't load. I deleted all the data in the cache and reloaded a much smaller chart area and that seemed to solve most issues.

Detail on the charts was good, panning, zooming and moving between menus was sensationally fast and the screen was visible in bright Med sunshine. It easily outperformed the iPad 1 I was using.

I had a cover with a magnetic switch and the Nexus woke quickly after being suspended by closing the cover, acquired the satellites in about 15 - 20 seconds and was soon displaying an updated position and course line. It isn't as fully functioned as a dedicated chart plotter but with the Navionics charts, MobileGRIB for weather, movies, music, email, web and so on it takes a lot of beating - especially as you could have 5 of these things for the cost of a new 7" touch screen dedicated plotter!

The 16 GB limit is an issue - unless you add a USB "On The Go" cable that allows you to add a keyboard, screen, mouse, USB Drive and so on.

I have my Samsung Galaxy Nexus on O2 and I get a 25MB a day limit - so I set up the Galaxy to allow tethering and it became a mobile hot spot. Coverage was good along the south coast of France although I did get a telling off when I used nearly a 100MB in one day.

Was I impressed? Totally. I really can't wait till Navionics get their act together and get the HD chart set working with the Google Nexus Tab.

Cheers

Ian

Private Apps

Hi

Did you do as Bumblefish suggested?

" I had to change the settings on the security to all installation via unknown sources but have changed that back now it is installed."

That worked for me.

I have just bought a Nexus 7 in the innocent expectation that I could run the Navionics software. Now I find I can't.
I am PC literate but completely new to Android. I have no other android devices. Can you spell out in very simple terms what I'd need to do?

If you have no other Android devices you can't transfer the files from an existing device therefore you're a bit stuffed until Navionics get their act together and release a version that's compatible with Jelly Bean.

You could lobby navionics to release an update or get a cheapo android device as your host for the initial purchase and then transfer across.

Fell free to pm me.

Without another Android Device your only hope I can think of is to try spoofing the model and build. There's a simple app here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.nathan.jf.build.prop.editor&hl=en that makes it quite simple to do. Be aware that spoofing the model is usually fairly safe but spoofing the release level may have unintended consequences - it SHOULD be fairly easy to put back though.

Obviously it's quite possible that the reason Navionics haven't added the Nexus 7 is that there's something obscure that genuinely stops the app working on a Nexus 7 or in Android 4.2.

Here is a list of what the settings actually do http://www.freeyourandroid.com/guide/build-prop-modifications - if you google "/system/build/prop" you should find a lot of info on it.

You will need to root your Nexus to do this though - that isn't a problem but if you are in the "I just want to use it" camp you probably won't want to go there http://www.geek.com/articles/mobile/how-to-root-the-nexus-7-20121116/

As Yasawa says, the real answer is to get Navionics to get their act together.

Navionics Nexus 7

hope this is the most relveant thread to post this reply to my query to mobile@navionics.com:

28th Dec 2012

"Thank you for contacting Navionics Mobile.

At this time, the Nexus 7 is not one of our currently certified tablets, and has not been tested with the Navionics Mobile HD apps. In theory, with an Android OS of 3.0 or greater, the app should load and operate. However, we cannot guarantee that our apps will work with this device, and you download the app at your own risk. Please notice that all sales are final. The Nexus 7 is currently being tested for certification. More information should become available shortly. At this time we cannot provide a precise date.

Follow us on Twitter and Facebook and check our website for news concerning additional smartphones/tablets compatibility: http://www.navionics.com/mobile-pc-app
