IPC recently seems to have replaced a number of old salts with journalists who have never been onboard a boat - the errors and silly mistakes are starting to affect my enjoyment of the magazines, and I now question a lot of their "hard facts"

This person was Loris Goring who writes for Sportsboat & Rib magazine who seems to be the new fuel guru. The fact that Expresslube are doing really well and are pumping out loads of tanks every week doesnt seem to have entered the mind of this person who seems to know better.

I am currently reading an article by the said person about boating abroad which I should send to Chris Roos of Expresslube so that he can criticise it, obviously being a businessman who removes fuel contamination for a living gives him the perfect qualiication to comment on boating abroad!

If it was the letter from Loris Goring to which you refer, whilst I know nothing of his expertise on fuel contamination, he is a hugely experienced "yachtsman" (inc' motor) who has been boating for more years than I am sure he cares to admit.

He was also writing for the boating press whilst you and I were still in short trousers, so don't assume he is not knowledgable.

Agree with miket. Loris Goring has written more boating books and articles than you've had hot dinners as well as designing and building his own motorboat. That doesnt mean he's always right but his views are due as much respect as somebody with a particular axe to grind on fuel contamination issues

Dom,

I haven't read the letter you referred to but I can assure you that Loris Goring, if he was the author, was one of the ealiest authors to bring issues about diesel contamination to peoples' notice, having worked as a valued constributor on MBM since its inception in 1987 and been involved with boating many years before that.

Loris might have his own opinions and so do you; both probably have value but I would find it regrettable for it to be seen, falsely, that Loris is without experience on boating matters generally and specifically on the issue of fuel contamination.

Oh Dom you do talk some bolx at times! All this hype re fuel contamination, it's getting as bad as surveyors prattling on about osmosis.

I was in the office talking to the dockmaster who was the local lifeboat coxsn for many years when in walked someone who had broken down with clogged filters, hardly surprising as the boat is rarely used and he got caught out in some fairly rough stuff over the weekend which agitated all the crap in his tanks.

He was talking about using the fuel cleaning people and asked the dockmaster for his opinion on this and whether the trawlers used the same people. Now Keith, as well as being the ex coxsn was also a trawlerman just shook his head and said he'd never heard of this and no none of the trawlers used this method, just recommended plenty of filters and suggested getting rid of the muck in the tank some other way.

But I suppose for someone who really can't be bothered to clean their own fuel system and wants a quick fix then whatever they're called offers good value.

BTW Loris Goring built a beautiful (IMHO) boat based on a Tyler displacement hull and I always enjoyed reading his articles, he was a proper boater, completely involved and just about self sufficient. I miss his knowledgeable articles.

Maybe his letter to MBM was a bit blunt and I think uncalled for, well fairs fair so were my comments but times change and so do the way we deal with things.

Life is about progression and sometimes yes the way we have done things works still works for you me and Joe Bloggs but then sometimes we all need to open our eyes to whats around and take in the new way even if it is only to acess it and then go back to the old.

If we didnt then 90% of us wouldnt be on here now.
