So I am a free man again today all tests/ transactions and paperwork completed and sale done...she is on to her next family and I am free to dream about the next one..roll on excell !

So I am thinkin..

Low cost and very quiet engines ..could be tempted to consider leccy but may be too early to spend my own hard earned on early techology

Doesnt need to be fast..but needs to look sexy

Modern interior but not too cuttng edge...Mrs likes the obligatory white leather..Can someone please tell me if there is a boat out there that has a sofa that a 6'2 guy can snooze on without falling off, getting a cricked neck or numb a$%^&?

2 cabins (3 better) 2 head min (mrs would like a square window in hers!)

Between 40 and 50 ft

Single helm position (I like all my loose bits and gadgets with me when helming and sick of running up and down stairs with armfulls of junk)

Outdrive Legs not IPS or shafts...I am drawn to beaches and love rivers.. ran aground many years ago ..no problem with legs...but never been able to relax with shafts since finding out the price of new props. IPS same..so thats out.

Limited amount of canvas to deal with

Easiest possible tender launch and recovery with storage that gets it out of the way

Rear cockpit area with proper table for dinner for 6

Couple of years in UK then off to the med for good

Capable (not suitable) of journey from UK to med via french canals (if shipping is too much agro)

Any suggestions?

I love threads like this. Don't know enough to be of any help to you but looking forward to following your progress Martin :). Whats your budget?

Afaik no-one is doing hydrid or any such technology on outdrives. So you'll have to have diesels. Modern elecronic diesels are great though, and outdrivers are pretty low drag, and you can drive slowly.

Did "low cost" refer to the engines or the boat?

To get outdrives you should look at the 40 foot sports cruisers from the usual suspects. A few hav glass and hardtop; no canvas. all can have white leather or just spec anything and get it changed. Th jeanneau prestige look nice to me if you want to get a slightly lower price (and finish, but they seem ok to me)

No boat in this size category has a proper sofa. They're all slabs of foam on hard GRP/wood bases. To have a properly sprung sofa you need a boat bigger than any outdrive boat, alas.

Trnasport to Med is neither here nor there. £4500 on a truck and it willl be there in less than a week. Forget canals.

If you're certain on med use remember to order airco and passerelle. A passerelle is important, but some boats dont have somewhere to put one or allow easy retrofitting. To run the airco away from sure you also need a genset. And a good tender is handy, becuase anchoring overnight is a (nice) necessity. Get the biggest freshwater tank you can. white hulls are better in the sun. Big fridge/cooler is necessary. Check the beam - a 3.9m will be much easier to berth than a 4.1m AOTBE. The berths are all whole numbers or x.5, so think before buying a boat that is x.1 or x.6m beam

For two cabins your choice is between the Fairline 44 Targa GT, Princess V42/V45, and Sealine SC42. I like very much the Fairline indeed.

If you want three cabins what the UK builders offer in your size is NIL.
You will have to look at the Windy 44 Chinook, or new Nord West 420 Sports (also available two cabins) for UK dealer boats.
For three cabins there is some other offers from Italy but having no British dealers I think it is useless wasting time and space here.
Other two cabin/heads options in my book would be the new nice.
- Atlantis 44 (40 knots plus performance with new D6-400)
- Cranchi M40 ST (very big exterior deck) this will sell hot IMo
- Galeon 385 HTS or Open. 40 feet LOA without extended optional up and down bathing platform, 44 feet with this.
- Beneteau 44 Flyer GT
- Prestige 440 S
I think all these have a dealer in the UK!

UPCOMING
Sunseeker should also launch a new 38 Portofino but I still don't know if this will be two or single head.
Galeon have also a new 420 HTC hard top with patio door upcoming build on the profile of the just launched 400 Fly, and this will have three cabins choice.

owww! tough decisions to have to make!!!

i was browsing Essex Boat Yards website last night and really like the Targa 47's they have there currently! like them a lot!!!

Requirements. 0.2

Agree about out drives and left.

Within reason ..More worried about running costs than purchase price

Prestige is my favourite looker at the moment but my heart is really princess

Didn't know about the berth/beam issue...this forum is great!

Will add passerrelle as had forgotten

Ac etc was already in mind..but need to make sure no noise in cabins...first boat I had with ac had the main unit under the sofa!!!

Will check out the Atlantis and cranchi as have lost touch with them

Can't get my head around sun seeker ..dunno why...just not me.

You need a chilled water type AC system then with the noisy compressor/heat exchanger bit located in the engine bay which then pumps chilled water to the various cabins where the relatively quiet air handlers can turn the chilled water into cold air. The air handlers are quiet enough to locate under a berth. Take a look at http://www.dometic.com/enus/Americas/USA/Marine/Cruisair/ or http://www.condaria.com/PRODOTTI%20eng.html

Martin, I presume the p45 has now gone.

more worried about runnings costs than purchase price, dont like shafts?

Have you checked out servicing costs? props are props, have you checked out dph drive props, they dont last as long as a typical shaft prop so budget there, along with servicing drives, new steering rams, extra anodes........ the list goes on and on, id do your sums before you decide on drives on a 45ft boat, ill tell you now even with volvos new docking system on a v45 it wont go sideways like IPS unless there is zero wind on the side along with twice as many vulnerable steering rams with electronic sensors dutyfully immersed in salt water, ive said my bit to help you.
