Well things have moved on, against some advice but following old gits and thanks to Brian I took out a Sealine 310 and 328 this morning. Lovely morning not a breath of wind and not another soul in sight. The thanks to Brian should also be sent to RYB as they arranged an earlier than usual ,9.00 am, DEPOSITLESS trial which I thought was impossible to arrange. Result, the 310 was everything I wanted in style and finish a really well kept boat but the engine noise was similar to my Shadow and very disappointing. the 328 I really liked, it thrummed (technical term) which was attributed to being six cylinder, not by me of course, I have no idea.

So, all excited I sat down with the servicing price lists from Bray and RYB and immediately took to drink ! I may still grit my teeth and go for the 328 but any comments on 4 versus 6 cylinders would be appreciated. Anyway I am off to type "shaft" into the search engine.

A modern 4 cylinder diesel, like the latest Volvo's are smooth enough, even at tickover. Older ones are more prone to vibration. Without doubt sixes are nicer all round, especially at low engine speeds.

Old diesels can smoke horrendously, especially when cold, and when subjected to long periods of low speed running. The best engines I had for the Thames were in a 310 Statesman (1994, flybridge), with two Volvo V6 petrols - so quiet and smooth it was hard to hear if they were running. Happy also to tickover at 1000 RPM, week in, week out. At river speeds, the petrol cost is minimal anyway (though not many places sell it these days on the Thames). However, if you intend to go to sea, that is another matter!!
