Newtown River (IoW) mooring c arges,

Again though, your money isn't the reason there isn't a nuclear reactor on the site. If they government choose to, they will boot out NT in a heartbeat. We don't need to pay people not to build things on their own land that they don't want to build on. It's ridiculous to suggest that without that "donation" the NT might inadvertently start building blocks of flats.

Er you twist things don’t you ?
Who said anything about blocks of flats ?
The NT exists to preserve
Doh

It is not free for NT members to use their buoys. I simply anchor and they usually pop over and ask for a donation which I refuse as I am a NT member, they respond in a friendly way and don't bother me again even if I am there for a few days. I can only guess their costs are to maintain all those white buoys, the boat to collect payment! and the various bird hides across the creek (which I have enjoyed using). In all the years I have visited the place, I don't see anything else the NT spend on to maintain the area, but I could be wrong. I assume all the staff are volunteers.

Congratulations to the NT for taking action to solve the overcrowding problem at on of the UK's most attractive anchorages. I picked up a buoy there afternoon for at lunch stop. I had barely switched off the engine when the harbour master came alongside and relieved me of the princely sum of £15 for my 31 ft boat.
So how much do you think you should pay? You haven’t had to get the anchor in and out and you were on a well maintained safe buoy. You navigated in safely thru the maintained channel. You have also enjoyed the ambience and beauty of Newtown.

This thread is getting a bit tense but I admit to being taken aback a couple years ago to be asked over a tenner for a lunch stop, more than marinas at the time. I think the buoys are good value for overnight in such a lovely location but the lunch charge is a bit steep.

Being an NT member brings no benefit so far as Newtown is concerned. As a member I'm happy to donate a fiver for a night's anchorage. If I stay a couple of nights it's very rare to be re-visited for more.
Try anchoring in the Keyhaven river, they'll charge you £10+ for the night, £6+ for a short stay, no request for a donation that's the charge. Ditto Beaulieu river.
Anyway, if you want to enjoy Newtown, do it in the next few years because the sea is slowly breaking through the eastern spit and it will change character when that happens. Because of the complexity of the regulatory bodies, land ownership, access etc it's unlikely anything can or will be done to prevent it.

It would be more pleasurable there if it was a members only club in summer surely🤣while we used to moor there in the 1970s it’s lost its attraction since for me given the risks of tangled anchors but I’m not a midweek sailor sadly.

I first anchored there back in the late 50s, when even in the summer and weekends, we often had the place to ourselves. Not sure if we were visited by anyone, until late 70s when as NT members, we chatted to the "hbr Master". Avoid it now though, avoiding brown water.
