Just a heads up for anyone going to Newtown Creek, the wooden pier on the western side , the one nearest the mooring buoys, is out of use.

Just passed there and there is hazard tape and signs saying out of use if you plan to use that to get ashore etc as we planned to..

Many happy memories of in the 60's 70's of the walk along track at field edge to the Pub ... sitting outside with bag of crisps and a Cider ...
That's further in isn't it ? By the boatyard on the way to Shalfleet? I thought this was the wooden pier a couple of hundred yards ( tops) in from the entrance?

Probably right .... last time I was in Creek was in 1980's .... and it was still quite a distance from anchor to the quay. The walk was along the creek side and path came out at along front of the Pub. Few yards more and was a road across at 90deg and other side an old Church.

Yes that is the one that is taped off and not to be used at the moment.

A shame as we used to use that pier a lot when here.

Not mine, but this little video on YouTube clearly shows the wooden walkway.

Tbh, I don't remember it having two handrails but then it is many many years since I last walked along it.

I think many people anchor in the creek, dinghy up to Shalfleet Quay and didn't even realise it was there.

That video is showing the walkway from Newtown Quay towards Newtown village. I don't think that is the pier that is closed.
The pier in question is the other side of the river, on the western bank, close to Lower Hamstead Farm.
Let's hope the pier re-opens soon, we used it frequently to go for walks.

Wonder who maintains it - National Trust? Would it be out of order to have a moan when they come round for their donation after you've anchored?

Dinghying up to Shalfleet Quay seems to have fallen out of fashion lately. Maybe partially down to the on/off situation with the New Inn (currently open I believe).

I think the NT maintain the pier, there's a donation box at the landward end.
I guess one could still go to the beach next to the pier at high tide. Not sure how long you'd be able to stay though.

In the mid/late 1970s it was Brickies Best (Brickwoods was a local Pompey beer) served from wooden barrels behind the bar.
'Brickies Best'! Now that's an oxymoron! An awful beer, which thankfully went down the tubes decades ago.
There's a story that the Pompey Field Gun crew were given a barrel of Brickie during training, and gave it back, virtually intact! :)

The Shalfleet Inn is open again with new proprietors and although not what it was in the 70s needs using to keep it going . Couple of weeks ago the food was good.

Here here on the New Inn. A lovely dinghy and stroll to the New Inn, and when I went a few weeks ago it looked very promising. So sad walking past to see it shut in recent years. Let’s hope it thrives.
