Newby question on oil change. Do I need to bleed?

One of my earlier boats had the 1GM10.When I changed the oil the first time I restarted the engine and the oil light stayed on so I stopped it.The guy on the boat next to me (ex engineer with French Marine) came on board, said give it plenty of revs when restarting to drive the oil round quickly.I did that and oil light went out straight away.

add some oil into the filter prior to fitting it ;) that helps

I run the engine for 5 mins, pump out old oil and pour in new stuff. After that I change the oil filter
i don't know if your engine is different to mine, but i tend to change the filter before putting in the new oil, else all the new oil comes out when you take off the filter

getting the filter off is often hell, especially if it's in a tight corner. you may end up having to stab the thing with a screwdriver to twist it off, or buy a fancy chain wrench.

I did exactly this on a 1GM this week. I used one of Sailorman's filter refs from the car spares shop. Only other bit to add is that mine took about 1litre at first; whizzed engine round with decomp lever for a second or two then checked again. Took about 1.3 litres in total as prescribed in manuals. Oh yes, disposable nappies under the filter when removing saves mess.

not below the sump, but not exactly above it either. i just heat engine, empty oil, change filter, fill new oil.

Thanks all. Glad to hear the range of options. Have brought a Pela and am looking at courses.

Regards
Richard

Unless your engine is awkward to get at, the 1GM10 will drain easily through the plug on the front of the engine (near the water pump).
