Newbie to roller-furling - advice please

Something nobody's mentioned is to keep your furling line in tip top condition, especially where it is made fast on the drum. Mine just goes through a hole and a stopper knot prevents it pulling through. The edges of the hole can be quite sharp. Anyway, the point is, you do not want the furling line parting when you are trying to reef the genoa in a F6 or more!

Sounds just the same as my set up, previous owners had set it up like that.
 
Dear OP,
You now have the distilled wisdom of a hundred combined years of operating problems. R Reefing is generally very effective & simple to install & use. Do not be put off. You may well have no problems at all, or possibly any one of the above.

One other thing to consider is to eliminate as much friction as possible from the furling line by making sure it runs nice & as straight as possible to the cockpit. And enjoy the extra control you get from easily adjusting the size of the genoa at will. It allows you to reduce speed accurately enough to be able to pick up moorings under sail once you get used to it.

Very true ... the number of boats you see tied up and a small amount of genny not furled and sheets barely tensioned ...

Always furl so 2 turns of sheets go round as well to basically lash the genny in place. No last bit of sail to flog. Once the turns are on - then tension up sheets and make off. That way genny and sheets are secure in any gale etc.

I'd like to thank you and all the other contributors for a truly wonderful response! The whole furling setup is now complete - all I've been waiting for is for the weather to moderate by at least two notches on the Beaufort Scale before going out for a joyous test sail...

and in the spirit of Practical Boat Owners....

20 foot length of 1.25 inch nominal Aluminium pipe designed for awnings, that has the slot pre cut. Needs to reinforced with a second pipe for offshore sailing. Must be welded to 40 to 50 foot lengths and is difficult to transport though. Similar length of plastic conduit is used as the inside bearing and the halyard turning block needs to attached to the top of the pipe and drum weleded to the bottom with a large 7 inch or so dia core to ensure easy furling.

Just about to start mine......
