Newbie to Cruising : Available to look over a yacht in Eastbourne by midday Saturday?

So this is a long shot, but there is a yacht I am interested in which is currently on hardstanding in Eastbourne.
I need a second opinion and if anyone is available, willing and able to meet me in Eastbourne, anytime from Thursday to Saturday midday can you please PM me?

I had originally planned on getting a proper survey but as mentioned previously, budget is tight, and the cheapest surveyor quote I have had is £330 (google search surveyors, Eastbourne) which along with everything else (Day sailing quals, VHF cert, moorings etc) is starting to blow the budget.
(and to spare the flaming: I know, that £330 now could spare me much much cost more down the line, except there is not much much more available, so would end up just walking away from the boat, not to mention the dometics it would cause).

PS. I am on the VHF course today so may be delayed in responding to any comms.

PPS if there is a marine surveyor/boat builder out there who would be willing to walk around the boat for a couple of hours and talk me through their thoughts and concerns would be willing to discuss appropriate renumeration.
 
I guess it depends how much you are spending.
Your first step is to go and look at the boat. Go by you self take a friend or the misses.
All you are asking now is do you like it, Is it the right type of boat, Right amount of space, bunks, stove head has it got enough.
what's it smell like. my misses turned a couple down right of smelt damp and mouldy.
look at every thing if you like it. plan the next step survey or look yourself.
Arrange for a haul out.
check by looking for blisters old probably will have small ones up to the size of a10p are probably not to big a problem big ones?
check keel to hull look for cracks or separation look at keel bolts.
small hammer tap hull. not hammer just a tap
you want to hear a sharp solid sound every where if not ?
look closely at rudder attachments lintels, propeller cutlass.

I bought my first small sailboat without a survey. it was small and cheep I expected some issues I was not concerned about a few blister keel was secure, mast rig appeared good sails were old but ok. motor worked. boat was mouldy and full of rain water. All upholstery cushions interior fittings missing. did I mention it was cheep.
Solid could be sailed right away, worked for me.
Cost about 100 to lift and pressure wash the broker showed me how to check the hull, and keel, he did not want to sell me a boat the keel would fall off he was actually very helpful.
I was very happy with the boat she suited me and my needs I owned for 6 years.

New boat much higher price could not afford the risked paid around a 1000 for haul and survey. Even so still found problems survey did not show.

All you are asking now is do you like it, Is it the right type of boat, Right amount of space, bunks, stove head has it got enough. Think how much it will cost to replace any item that you would consider needs replacement, some can be more than you expect

look closely at rudder attachments lintels, propeller cutlass. Check for play in rudder stock and propeller cutlas

One thing I would ask, does it have an inboard? That is often the biggest crutch of the matter... If there is any doubts budget for replacing it... On the type of boat your looking at unless you are handy with mechanics I would budget 7k.

If it has an outboard bracket on the stern and an inboard I would ask why? at some point the engine may have been questionable.

Also consider the cost of transporting boat (sail or road) to your final destination, I would budget 1k. I would hope to have some change from this but I would not be so certain...

Certainly the type of boat you are looking at I could recommend provided standing headroom is not an issue...

Make a list.

Use a digital camera and take LOTS of photographs. You can always use them to ask for help here.

DO NOT BUY ON THE SPOT. Go home and think about it. There are LOTS of boats for sale.

Then think about it some more. Go and look at lots of other boats - you will be amazed at the quality of boats at the same price. If you are happy with your original choice then look at it again. Then and only then think how much it is worth to you and make an offer, sort out a survey.
 
I always like looking at boats and will be in the marina on Saturday morning.

I'm not a surveyor though.

But if you get no other takers and want someone to mull things over with, then let me know.

Huge , huge thanks to SAPurdie (SteveP) for spending the time to look over the boat in Eastbourne on Thursday. Also thanks to nimbusgb (Ian) for giving it a good once over too.

Pending a sea trial the deed is done and the boat will be mine, possibly by the end of next week.

SteveP I am writing your notes up now. They will be part of my maintentance plan going forward.

Congradulations on your new boat.
Its often said the two best days of boat ownership are the day you buy it and the day you sell it.
this is pure BS.
The best day of boat ownership is the first day you sail it. and it keeps getting better

There was an article in a French magazine about buying a boat around €10000. The boats, ranging from a Beneteau 211 to a Gibsea 28 were all visually acceptable. The surveyor showed that two would have to have essential repairs that would have made them completely uneconomic. Eg, the Beneteau needed repairs hat would have added 50% to the acquisition cost.

Think in terms of what might represent a significant sum of money: engine/transmission replacement, new sails, osmosis treatment, rigging change. Would you or a friend be able to judge those?

Incidentally a French firm is selling a kit to enable you to analyse engine oil, which is normally what is recommended to test the condition of the engine.

Congratulations on the new boat. Now that the deed is done, spill the beans, which boat is it? (there are several listed on the web)
 
Not wishing to tempt fate I will hold off saying anything until the sea trial is completed successfully which should happen next week and the monies have changed hands.
