Newbie questions on Volvo Penta 2002

"I used what I think they called 'cold start procedure'. Pulled the stop lever up. Put the throttle on full and engine in neutral. Push the stop lever down and push start button."

I don't think you have that in quite the right order. As I understand it, pulling out the stop lever advances the fuel rack and increases the fuel to the cylinders. To get the full effect, this should be done AFTER setting the throttle to (in my case) half to 3/4. So it's set throttle, then pull stop lever out and back in again. That's what works for me anyway.

Correct, that's what Volvo Penta suggest.

Does anyone add additives or redex type stuff to the fuel? Does it make much difference to this type of engine?

Also, does an alarm go off if the raw water cooling gets blocked?
I use Solton as a diesel bug preventative and there is zero effect on the engine.

YES the alarm goes off if the cooling water gets blocked. OK it might be because the engine is getting hot, but the result is the same. In my boat the inlet is right beside the engine so just a matter of stopping the engine, turning the seacock to off, then remove the hose and sort out the blockage out.

I used to have a 2002, and it seemed to run better with a small amount of two-stroke oil mixed into the fuel.
Modern low sulphur diesel has less lubricating properties than 1980s diesel did, and I think adding 2T oil at about 200:1 or so compensates for that

I'm not disagreeing with you as you might well be right ...... but I have two 200 litre diesel tanks on my cat and your suggestion would require pouring a litre of oil into each tank. That sounds like rather a lot of oil to burn off.

Waiting for the engine to overheat due to lack of water is a bad idea.
1. The impeller is running dry and will rapidly fail, which could be the reason for lack of water out of the exhaust.
2 The exhaust is cooled by the seawater before it enters the rubber exhsust hose. This hose is not designed to carry raw hot exhaust and will soon delaminate and block the exhaust.
