I am about to buy my first motor boat, subject to survey ,but although I have day skipper and my wife and I both have done the helmsman RYA course, other than that we have no real experience. We intend to get further tuition but is there a particular insurance Co. anyone could recommend that is more sympathetic to newbies ?

many thanks
Tim

Insurance is a bit of a minefield, but I use CRAFT INSURE. The quotes are quick and easy to get without having to give them everything including your inside leg measurement and your aunt Mildred's date of birth, and they always seem to come back with a competitive quote.

Think you are going to have to build up your NCD no matter where you go.. I have no qualifications but the only reduction it would have given having qualifications is in the excess amount to be paid.. With my policy as I build up my NCD I get a decreased excess as well..

Another +1 for Craftinsure.
Never claimed personally, but I know someone who did put in a claim which was paid out in full and without fuss.

Plenty of people buy a boat with no qualifications so I can't imagine you will encounter any issues obtaining insurance.

many thanks to all sounds like 'y' insurance is worth a ring ,plus a huge thank you to Volvo Paul for his ENDLESS advise I have pestered him constantly and he has never failed to help out when I really am way out of my depth- much appreciated the woodpecker is on me !! Survey 14th June if all goes well will post photos - soooo excited

Y Insurance yet again. Just had to make a claim, all dealt with by e-mail really quickly with no drama. Sue & Claire are stars....

+1 for Y insurance. Only experience before our Targa was a 12ft dinghy. Policy all sorted in a matter of minutes over email

That for me would be a negative, quick easy quote doesn't necessarily lead to decent cover or a good claims record, and lack of initial information being requested leads me to assume that they will insure anyone just so long as they, the insurers have money coming in. Maybe unfair on Craft insure, but I would be wary.

The policy is with navigators and general and you do have to confirm some statements of fact before the cover is in place, but my point was that it is easy to get a quote to see what sort of premium you are looking at. Most other boat insurance companies require you to fill in a complete proposal form before giving you a figure.
