Hi ,a friend of mine is fed up with the way the UK is going and is seriously considering a sell up and ship out to New Zealand as he has relations there.
He knows that there is a big sailing following in NZ but is having trouble getting advise. Is there a forum like this one for NZ yachtsmen?
He wants local info on Marinas, boats ect.
thanks

Go to http://www.searchenginecolossus.com, click on "N", go to "New Zealand", and have a look at all the Kiwi websites. You may find something there to guide you to a boaty website.

I've used this search engine in the past to find things not found by google or any other search engine.

There are a couple of very active BBers from Kiwiland , who on reading your note ,will assist.
NZ has some great sailing grounds, however we in OZ have more , think of us as your finmal destination, remembering you can always head over the Tasman for a quick holiday. Also remember , half of the NZ population live here. !!!!

If you need help on OZ.. just ask,... again tons of us ready to assist.

I am a Kiwi living in the Far North of NZ. Funnily enough I know of no websites that specifically offer such information.
If you have specific questions I would be happy to answer them, as I'm sure, would the other Kiwis on this site.
Auckland is our biggest city and also our largest sailing centre although there are plenty of yachts everywhere else.

There are no forums such as this one for NZ yachtsmen. Coverage of the pleasure marine industry, including marinas, etc can be found on http://www.yachtingnz.org.nz which from memory gives links to various yacht club sites which give further details of activities - one can subscribe to email newsletters with Yachting New Zealand.

As BrianJ says, Australia has much nicer sailing waters including most of them being warmer than here in NZ, which is a big plus (do not let anyone say NZ is warm, it is cold and I say that as a NZ'er - warmer than UK though). However, Australia is harder to emigrate to. Auckland waters are over-rated in my opinion (shallow, uninteresting, unchallenging, cold water, but place to be if a serious keelboat racer), Marlborough Sounds and Tasman Bay at top of South Island are very good (but cold water and trying to get to unless one choses to live in a little town - otherwise if a city life and job desired then Christchurch is a 4-5 hour drive and if live in Wellington one has Cook Strait to contend with but that is not a big problem if one has a serious boat), further south is testing of endurance (cold and apart from Fiordland not much to sail to apart from bare coast with no refuges). Far North I do not know much about, but it is not as warm as made out to be and serious paying jobs are non existant.

Just remind your friend that NZ currently has a social engineering finger wagging government too, so he should investigate carefully.

Re: great

Hi and thanks to all i have passed on all your advise, From what he says he will need to be near a city like Christchurch for employment and drive to his boat at weekends.
Intresting point about the weather, we both thought it would be a bit warmer than the uk.(north is) and a bit colder in the south, a bit like uk but upside down.
OZ is also being concidered but unless your name is Richard Branson or you are a brain surgeon is seems you have little hope.

Re: surprised..

OK I live here so dont really know.. but you said its hard to get into OZ..WHY > ? Have you tried ,.. what difficulties are you facing ?
One well known way of getting here is via NZ.. stay there for a while then head over.. but I am NOT advocating that if its illegal !!!
Do know a couple from South Africa , who would have made outstanding OZ citizens , had heaps of red tape thrown at them , so much so that they gave up. Such a pity as they were great sailing people and had accompliished much in life.. really the type of people we should have..
Would be interested in your comments.

difficulties of getting into Oz...

yes it's difficult. daughter & son-in-law (both vets) have just got residency after 2 years of supporting the australian legal profession. they came very close to jacking it in but persevered and made it at last, subject to leaving the country to get the visa stamp at a foreign embassy.

if we wanted to join them we would have to (a) have at least half our family living outside the UK and (b) shell out $25000 for a visa. the days of the £10 passage are well and truly gone! still, the US makes it look like a cakewalk.

Re: surprised..

Oz is even very much more restrictive than almost all (maybe all?) other western nations even for visitors, let alone immigrants.

Unusually, it has no visa free agreements with any other nation at all (well didn't 10 minutes ago when I double checked). No non resident or non citizen can embark for travel to Australia for any purpose, including a tourist visit, without first obtaining a visa (in some instances it can be a paperless visa). New Zealand citizens have almost free entry for all purposes including residence and work but in their case (and their case only) an electronic visa is issued "behind the scenes" (no application is required).

Generally, the citizens of most western nations (but excluding visitors to Australia) can travel to any other and a visa will be issued at the visited country's border together with the permit - and obviously even easier than that once one has entered a bloc such as the EU where non EU citizens generally only get issued a visa/permit at the first port of entry (UK used to be an exception but do not know if it still is as have not been there for some time /forums/images/icons/frown.gif).

The Oz travel industry have moaned about this for years as it restricts tourism (they claim, probably rightly). But' tiz a nice country and will be there again next week, lucky me in the lucky country again /forums/images/icons/smile.gif.

Re: surprised..

blimey.and there is the UK taking 80% of the european refugees..Well ok maybe more like 20 or 30 % but still far to much.IMHO And a hard working relatively wealthy ,fit 30 something is finding it hard to get out.
I am no racist and i deplore the attitude that they have but when they say that" if they were such and such that they would get better treatment" I am inclined to agree.
Any way he has applied for information from the OZ embassy.

If it were me i would rather stay in europe and be a little closer should i be needed back home.

Re: surprised..

The Far North of NZ is probably quite a bit warmer than the British Isles as it is quite a bit warmer than the rest of NZ.

I think the cruising grounds from the Hauraki Gulf Nortwards are pretty nice. They are not crowded at all other than peak holiday times.
I had a really invigorating sail today on Doubtless Bay and there was only one other sailing vessel out. I came back with a little sunburn. The fishing wasnt much good though.- Still, cant have everything!
