I'm just in the process of fitting my Yanmar 3ym30 ae and noticed the 120 amp alternator doesn't have a dedicated BAT connection - anyone fitted one of these engines

Is the alternator the usual Hitachi manufactured one? My 3YM30s are both Hitachi 80A and have the large +ve BAT terminal near the T connector. Something has obviously been changed on the 120A version but if it is Hitachi it would help to pin down the connectors.

Hi thanks for the replies, not sure of the make - the manual shows an alternator with obvious BAT connector, this isn't the case with new 3ym and 125 amp alt

The manufacturer's name should be embossed on the back or side and a label on the side might also give the same info plus a model number unless its been removed. You can then look online for the actual model and should find all the connection information.

If its anything like my 1GM then the negative is earthed to the engine, and the positive comes from the positive terminal on the starter motor.

My understanding is that the OP doesn't have a terminal on the alternator with BAT alongside it so doesn't know which terminal to connect the positive to. Presumably there isn't one with a big + sign either.

OK I've had a look, its a Valeo part number 128990-77250 - looking at the cables I will end up with a starter battery connected to starter motor which in turn is connected to the alt, can I supply split charge relay from here ?
