Just completing on an Oceanis 411 and was going to keep the boats in Wales, but weather's awful and moat place either dry out or are full

Most south coast areas are around 4hrs from me so acceptable

Apart from MDL, Premier etc that suddenly seem to have lots of spaces, where else has spaces , looking at Plymouth, Poole or Southampton to Portsmouth

Never considered river moorings as my other boats and ones I looked at buying where power boats.

Would like active yacht club for cruises if possible

I am in Plymouth, all the marinas are full, have pushed their prices through the roof and insist on a 12 month contract. You might find a mooring with one of the clubs on the Tamar.

Try Wicormarine at Fareham -it’s where we started out but might have space -there is a club at Hardway but I suspect their moorings are too small for a 411 -we are at Haslar which is now part of boatfolk group so would be worth a look-I suspect space to be had at Portland and other boatfolk marinas and cheaper than Solent .

Would you consider a swinging mooring? If so, I'd give Gosport Boat Yard a call. A bit more expensive than some others, but moorings are well maintained and there's a launch to take you out to your boat.

I think Hardway SC does have a few moorings suitable for your boat, but join the club because it's a friendly place with good facilities. As for the mooring, get on the waiting list and you might live long enough to get one.

All the ones I approached, gosport, haslar, Hayling Islands, port hable etc
Gotcha, thank you. I thought you might have meant down here in the South West. As Sandy said above, I understand Marinas here in Plymouth are full. Perhaps not Dartmouth or Brixham/Torbay though? Interesting it's not the case around the Solent. I heard of some scary prices for marina berths on the Hamble... perhaps that's why.

Congratulations on your purchase. The 411 is a fine vessel 👍

Have you considered The Clyde as an alternative to Wales?

I had 20+ years in north Wales but moved 5 years ago. I’m about 4 hours (generally consistent) from The Clyde and about 4-7 hours (traffic can be appalling) from south coast.

Thanks, I lived up in Argyll and loved the area, but 7 or 8 hours from me now and too far, limiting it to 4 at a push as I can travel down Friday after work. Also office is in Surry, so can use as a base sometimes

Wicor is always a good option with river and now walk ashore moorings. I was there for over 10 years.
Hardway and Porschester both have a good club

I'm based at Wicor on a walk-ashore berth. There is water on the pontoons but no electricity.

But winter marina berths in the Solent aren't usually a problem. I would expect the marinas to be cheap in the winter.

Nothing in Solent marina is cheap but sometimes taking a winter berth if not ashore at say port Solent or Gosport boatyard is a way to move on to a summer berth. Also being in a winter berth at Haslar at least means someone be it staff or liveabords are keeping an eye on boat which might not apply at Wicor . Port Solent is perhaps easier to drive to though as you avoid Gosport drivers etc and I guess you might not want to exit lock too much. Also more stuff on site like a cinema ,shops, large chandlery etc compared to Gosport. We do have gunwharf quite close though with its many cultural delights plus the green cross harbour ferry trips to enjoy etc.

Join the waiting list for a HM mooring on the Hamble. Sure it’s 10+ years but when one does come up you will be pleased you did. Current cost is £50 a year and 10mins to fill in a form. My view was that by joining I could take advantage or marina berths when working and a cheaper option for l retirement. Things changed so I’ve ended up on a sub 8m river mooring for a few years and soon will get close to the point where I can get a 10m one. Then I’ll buy a bigger boat:)

Yes I’m on it. Strangely sometimes you go up then you go down. I monitor regularly in anticipation. Annoyingly I know of several unused for years. One person has never ever used his just wants to keep it. In my range it’s dropped 16 in the last year. I won’t be back until 2025 anyway too nice up North to rush back. Miss the mid week race!!! Night though.

Edit hope your progressing well with your new boat.
