Just thought I'd share this little table 'to season the stew'.....

One might query what one can reliably derive from inspection of the above.

One might....

I am continually surprised how many CQR are still in use. I get that there's no reason to bin one necessarily, but with new boats being brought in all the time you'd think their market share would be dwindling by now!

Spade and Fortress were introduced around 30 years ago, there was then a big gap till the West Marine/Yachting Monthly/Sail tests (25 years ago) - which are constantly quoted - there is a huge market available for the 'new' designs - they have really not made much impact. Apart from Rocna, almost no impact.

This is an American survey but here in Oz yachts at boat shows tend to have a Delta. If those numbers were in Oz I would have expected more Deltas, no Fortress and almost no Danforth/Britany.

I do notice that if the chandler stocks Rocna, or Manson - then the predominance of modern anchors are what the chandler stocks and the popular new gen anchor might be different in a different marina. The apparent popularity of Rocna in this survey may not be typical. If people buy a new anchor they, at least in Oz, tend to buy what is convenient. The trick for the anchor maker is having your anchor stocked in the chandler.

If you strip out Rocna as possibly not being typical (but it might be replaced by another NG model) - then 70% still use old style anchors. I suspect the NG anchors counted were actively bought by the owner, possibly replacing Delta, or whatever is common/cheap in that specific geographic market France might have a Plastimo model)

My guess is that every yacht included had a MFD

I have done similar surveys from time to time. I am not sure the results show much. This one was from 2013:

Delta 65
CQR 33
Spade 16
Bugel copy 12
Rocna 11
Kobra 10
Brittany 10
Bugel 9
Bruce 8
Claw 6
Brake 5
Kingston quickset 5
Plough 4
FOB rock 3
Shark 3
Jambo 3
Danforth 3
Fortress 1
Manson Supreme 1
SARCA 1
Stockless 1
Excel 1
Fisherman 1
FOB-HP 1

A different part of the world etc, so the results cannot be directly compared, but it does illustrate the relatively slow switch to new generation anchors.

Our boat was bought with a CQR and will be sold with a CQR. In between those times we use a Rocna. I guess some boat owners remain happy with what they have, at least until they need to rely on it in more testing conditons.

If I had to guess I'd say there were a decent proportion of French yachts. I have never had the time nor inclination to conduct a survey - but French owned yachts appear to be the owners of most Spades, Kobra's and Brittanys - whether it be in Tahiti, Borme or Leros. (and Americans of Fortress (or genuine Danforth) and Germans with Bugels)

There are strong nationalistic purchasing patterns.

My informal survey in Greece showed much the same. Many charter fleets select Delta, which pushes the numbers up.
