New V-Belt - How hard should it be?

Your mates probably don't have spanners, just lump hammers.

The OP just needs to undo the alt mountings until he can get the belt on, if he cannot reassemble the bits with the new belt on, then the belt is wrong.
As said, belts are measured on the medium of the 'height' not the outside or inside.
Never really thought about that one. But now you mention it. The gadget that our local company has mounted on the wall, for measuring belts, fits inside the belt with 2 semi circles that open out to the inside of the belt. There is a scale betwem the 2 semicircles giving the circumfrence. I wonder how it calculates the adjustment for the mid height for different sections of belt.

These are essential for some applications where a split belt is required rather than dismantle machinery to install them such on shaft drives.

I can remember back in the 70's .... you could buy emergency belts made up from links clipped together. Never had one ... but for use on our boats - could be a 'lifesaver'.

I have to admit that I keep telling myself to get a spare belt just in case - but never do. My Perkins has ample adjustment on mount to remove / replace and tension.

On my Beta engine which tends to eat fan belts I fitted a spare fan belt tied back to the engine so that if one went it's a simple matter to run the new one without having to dismantle stuff to get it on.
