Now look here chaps I know I'v asked this before but if you fill screw heads with bog standard polly filla I reckon that if painted with epoxy the epoxy will soak in giving a super hard permanent filler . What do you think--- has anyone tried before??

Cheers all

Epoxy is not runny or thin enough to absorb into polyfilla. You certainly shouldn't try to mix it with dry polyfilla as it is a different chemical altogether.

If you want to fill screw heads, then put some microfibres in with the epoxy. These will be available from the same people that you bought the epoxy from. An even more cost effective way; and just as acceptable; is to use wood shavings/dust from the same timber that you have cut out.

On some american sites i have seen them talk about mixing epoxy with cement which apparently works, but I think some sanding dust is a good way to go if you dont want to buy proprietary fillers.

G'day Terry,

A good cover for screw heads is a mix of epoxy resin and closed cell balloons, but if you want to save a bob use talcum powder, don't use anything with fibres in it, it will be hard to sand off or will not give a smooth finish.

I Hope this helps

Good God NO!

Anyone who has tried to remove screws that are held in place by epoxy dribbles from plugs or filler, or worse, because the builder has dipped the screws in epoxy (!) will agree that there is a special place in Hell reserved for those who do this sort of thing.

I can confirm epoxy and cement works very well as a filler. Filled three large holes on coachroof after removing bolts that had been set through the deck with epoxy-cement mix. Sanded pretty easily and was easy to use.

Re: Good God NO!

The idea was when laying new ply decks to fill screw heads with normal Polly filla /water mix then when sand as normal (dead easy to sand) then paint with epoxy(using heat gun to make epoxy runny) A to harden up filler and B to completely seal fixing prior to painting. Not expecting to have to remove in the future .

Cheers

Don't mix fillers - it is pretty easy to sand epoxy mixed with the standard filler and makes for a permanent "plug". However, even with well faired epoxy, you can sometimes still see the mark when painted. So the best method is to use wood plugs and chisel / sand flat. For Ian Wright and others who want to remove screws from an epoxied hole, use a hot soldering iron on the top of the screw for about a 30 seconds to a minute, this will soften the epoxy around the thread and it will then unscrew easily.

You show a touching degree of faith, depend upon it someone will, eventually, need to shift those screws.
Best I think to use good epoxy putty over well greased screws, each screw with a disc of masking tape on top. Still,,,,,,,,, it's your boat..

Re: polyfilla

I remember helping a mate scrub his boat and touch up the hull before a holiday trip. He discovered a ding in the wooden hull , and as he had run out of marine filler and we were miles away from any place selling it, he decided to bodge it with permafill which is an exterior polyfilla type product. the mend was still good four years later when he sold the boat . It was well above the waterline though.so you never know!
