I s'pose we're the old dogs, but I'm finding there really is nothing new under the sun - leastwise, when it comes to boats. Have a look with me at a clip from Scientific American, of March 1871:
Plain as day, there's a group of 'Low Friction Rings'.... and also a 'Dogbone' showing its use to join an eye and another rope-end. I don't suppose the old seadogs used coated titanium alloy or hollowbraid dyneema, but the product designers at Allen Bros, Barton and Antal must surely have been looking at the solutions old-timer riggers were working with.
