New to boating - what do I need?

I have just collected my new boat and arranged mooring at the river. I have arranged a course to improve my skills, purchased a river licence and insurance but I wanted to confirm if there is anything else I need?

Also regarding insurance, do you have any suggestions on good providers - it’s just a 30ft on the river?

Depending on the river you may need a boat safety scheme certificate.


You will need a decent set of tools, service parts like impellers and filters and the knowledge of how to fit them.

Boat go wrong regularly

A highly developed sense of patience when dealing with many in the marine industry. You don't say what level your engine skills are at but if modest then a mate who knows marine engines and might give you some advice might be useful to prepare you for the future?
 
Just add fuel.
We have a rope in place on each corner at all times ...ready for all mooring possibilities .
Do you have a vhf radio and the operators certificate and ships radio license?

Hi and welcome.Where are you based ?
 
If you're on a non-tidal river, some of these suggestions are a bit invalid!

As someone new to it all myself, I would say the most essential, and beneficial thing I bought was training.
I don't necessarily mean approved RYA type courses, but somebody who can give you hands-on experience of close quarter handling, securing the vessel, basic maintenance ideas, what you should carry etc etc.
Whether this is an approved inland waterways training school, a marina, club member or just a knowledgeable friend it doesn't really matter as long as they know what they're doing and are good at getting that knowledge across.
For me, joining a club (Rochester cruising club) and boating in company was the biggest boost to my boating after a few hours spent with one of the marina staff teaching boat handling.
