As the weather looks really bad for a re start for at least 4 days does anyone fancy a timed start next monday night we could all set DCs and start at the same time about 98 hrs from now looks OK. If anyone is up for it I suggest next Monday night at 2200hrs We could check in anytime on the hour beforehand and set an accurate timed delayed start.
Hopefully this would give most people that have started a chance to finish if not we could delay the start if the weather is suitable and they want to take part but are still racing.

OK. Gybe completed.

Count me in on Monday night. Good idea especially since Sarabande is buying all the drinks in Boston.

:D

Hi..
I am completely new to this and have just registered.. but the software has already put my boat at the start with a place/position number..
The instructions say that you have not started until you input a command. Is this correct that I have not started yet? and if you do start before your planned 2200 departure.. how do you get back to re-start?

Many thanks in advance.

If you hit "send command" button your boat will start and the only way back to the start is to finish. This race is a bit different because it is timed and you can start whenever you want. There is a race this weekend "RIO in port", if you register for that now you can start practising now and you will atomaticaly be taken to the start 1 hour before start time. It would be a good way of getting in some practice if you want to do the Boston-Plymouth race.

Are you YBW_MJM?

Good luck

Welcome to SOL Martin. I hope you don't get addicted too easily!

The transatlantic record race is a bit different from the others SOL organises. Most races you can practice beforehand. This one you can't. If you set off, you can't get back until you reach Plymouth. You won't start until you have executed a command. Having tried for the record twice, we want to have an 'in house' race with other ybw boats which is why Spiro (Booby Trapper) has suggested we wait for some others then all start together. If you want to wait until Monday then you can still register for the Inport Rio race which starts tomorrow morning and have a practice today then race tomorrow.

If you want any advice let us know but here are a few tips.

One hour before the start of a normal race all the boats are dragged back to the start line.

You have to set a start course (CC or TWA) within an hour of the start otherwise you won't move - doesn't apply to the transatlantic record race. You can do this using a delayed command (DC) if you aren't going to be at the computer.

Use the compass rose tool to set your course. Select it, move it to the direction you want to go, left click the mouse to fix that course in the steer boxes on the right, choose CC or TWA (and delay if you want) then 'send command'.

When using the compass tool, the predicted boat speed for that course appears to the lower right of the polar diagram. It also shows VMG which is velocity made good relaive to the WIND direction not the mark.

There is a weather slider bar at the bottom of the screen so you can see predicted weather days ahead. Weather is usually updated every 6 hours from real current weather data so the predictions can change as in real life.

Friendly banter between boats is welcome!

Good luck.

Edit: Doh! Beaten again by Booby.

Yep count me in.

I suggest you don't login to the race before hand for fear of accidentally sending a command and starting when you dont want to !! ;) (Although it didn't turn out too bad for you, Well done.

Interestingly, if you sort the leaderboard with "YBW" there's a pair of Boobys at the top. :D

Yes - looks like the replies are coming in pairs.. as well as the Boobys.

Thank you. I am indeed ybw_mjm. I thought that once registered I might have been able to input a boat name. It looks like the registration name sticks.

A practice in Rio sounds like an excellent plan - hopefully it will let me do that whilst waiting on the Transat start line.. I'm not sure how much practice is needed. I would have thought that the longer race would be easier.. just getting trickier towards the end.

If you want to change your name, just email the SOL admin.

One thing I like about SOL is the people running it. They are often on the chat, they are very helpful and they have a gentle and diplomatic way in dealing with any complaints.

Each race is separate so you can enter all of them if you want. They don't usually have more than two running at the same time.

Sounds like a good idea.
I hadn't re-registered to run again as we are going to Arran tomorrow for a week, but there maybe a chance we are coming home on monday, if we do, I'll enter at 2200hrs like you suggest.

Cheers

Al.

GunSmoke is up for it.

Do I have to get SOL to change my login name fo rthe YBW suffix, or can they just change the boat name?

Excellent!

I think the log in name and boat name are the same. With the ybw prefix, others can search the boat tab by entering ybw and show all the ybw fleet.

My son's boat (Skidaddler) will also be starting at 2100hrs, he hasn't been able to get his name changed though.
