new spanner set

I love my little 1/4" socket set and reach for it first when ever possible but would get a 1/4" breaker bar to add to the set as I have been through a number of ratchets applying too much force. Would second the opinion that most spanners are good enough quality especially as if putting a lot of force on it a ring spanner is the only way to go, spanner wise.

My basic onboard spanner set comprises:
opened ended metric
open/ring metric
short open ended/ring spanner set
1/4" socket set
3/8" rachet and selection of sockets
Bacho small and large adjustable spanners

Plus lots of other stuff.

Would also recommend getting ratchet without nice voluminous plastic handle.

I love buying tools when I have the money and need, have fun.

Next question, which are metric and which ones are Imperial?

From memory, because the photo is not good enough to be sure and I'm not going out to the garage at this time of night to check.

2nd one in from the left and the the 6" one left of centre are metric ones
and
the 8" one right of centre is an Imperial (AF) one

The one on the extreme left and the big one in the centre may be Whitworth/BSF and the one on the extreme right is obviously BSP

The others are I think all universal.

Seriously two of them have mm scales on the jaws, so must be metric, and one has an Imperial AF ring spanner at the end of the handle so must be Imperial

One of them, and I never remember which, has a worm that is opposite handed compared with all the others..... that's a real pain!

Would you like me to show you my Stilsons as well .

When I was a kid cheap spanners were utter carp, nowadays just about anything will do the job fine, pros obviously want the better stuff as they will destroy them.
Ive got both, good stuff at work and cheap ones in cars/boat and none have been an issue.

Santa has let me down so I'm back in the market. I did get a 10" stillson from the antiques market for a fiver the other day - genuine USA manufacture Walworth. :-))

Good time to get your set while you are doing your tinkering ashore as you will become familier with which spanners fit where and, more importantly, if you need extra or ‘special’ spanners or cranked or ratchet for some jobs. is there commonly not a gap between (afair) 14 and 17mm. I know I had to buy one ( 15mm?)

Will be down there on 8th. At that price might even buy 2sets as someone suggested. Better than Cliffs first suggestion, are they gold plated or summat.

I had a look at the lidl special offer ones and decided against. They didn't have a very good finish but were no doubt strong enough. Silverline are nice and shiny. After all spanners are spanners and I've never broken one except when using a scaffold tube on one.
