Get back to building that snowman

Hi guys, I've sent an email through to ECM requesting a berth from Friday night through to Sunday night leaving Monday. Debbie will be joining us on the ride, she's entered the Prudential Ride 100 this year with me so will be putting in some training miles over the coming months. That said, Saturday 19th is our 27th wedding anniversary so the ride might have to factor in a few pub stops along the route ::)

looking forward to meeting up with friends and new faces.

Good effort on the Pru 100. I'm not quite brave enough to pull the trigger. Tried a long ride on the trainer last weekend and ended up damaging my IT band (outer right leg). Ok now but I need to see how real world riding relates to trainer riding. Subject to the weather I've planned a ride this time next week around Colchester / West Mersey. Emily has a cheer competition there.

At the moment I only ride 1.5 - 2 hour rides. To be fair though you never really free wheel on the Turbo trainer, even going downhill you have to pedal.

When you do a long ride how long do you actually ride for at a time ?

H, Gary would ride for 48 hours without a stop. For us mortals, stopping every 2 hours or so makes sense, 20 ish miles depending on the terrain.

Hi Henry, I think you'll be fine mate so long as you ride the first long ride within your limits. I did last year's pru 100 in 5hrs 30m with a puncture and a stop around Leith Hill.. 5hrs 15m moving time. The 208 miler Chase The Sun event from Isle of Sheppy to Burnham on Sea was 13 hrs in the saddleand circa 10,000ft of climbing but it was the weekend of last June when temperatures hit 90+ for most of the day so total riding time was nearer 17 hrs for the day with lots of stops to hydrate. Typical 100 miler club ride has about 6 hrs moving time.

Big challenge for me this year is the L'etape Wales Dragon Tour, organised by the same folk who run the tour de France.. 3 days of challenges, day 1 is 65 miles with 6000ft of climbing, day 2 the same to make sure the legs are warmed up for day 3, 190 miles with 16,000ft of climbing up and down the Welsh mountains.

Considering this time last year I couldn't ride 20 miles without getting out of puff, it doesn't take long to take on these tougher rides and I reckon you're ready, you'll surprise yourself.

Longer rides tend not to be so much about physical fitness, it a mental thing, hitting the wall, cycling through it and coming out the other side feeling accomplished

I’ve booked in FP for Friday 18th May and Saturday 19th May at ECM.
Apparently they need at least (8? not sure) boats to confirm the rally discount.

Any two wheeled activities will be dependent on being able to get some training in.

I'd like to say a deffo now but need to buy the boat first. All this waiting is killing me. I want it now!

The Welsh ride seems crazy. If they based it in Norfolk you could call into Great Yarmouth for doughnuts and dogems :)

I totally get your mental comment. There are so many times when I think there's nothing left and I want to give up only to find myself pushing on at good numbers 5 mins later. The hope on a ride like the Pru 100 would be that you get dragged round by the event. Overtaking a few people would help as well !!!

We shall see. Asthma UK still have places available ....

Rafiki booked in Friday/Sat.

Col, could we book a suitable table at The Lifeboat?

I'm sure we can. I was in there last weekend on a table of 18, so with enough notice they should be able to sort us out. In fact If the organiser doesn't mind I can call them this week. (even though it is slightly above the pay grade of a liaser  )

Had dropped you a PM re the Lifeboat. I can call them, no problem.

Please can I now get an idea of numbers. ECM have asked for a rough idea so need to confirm Monday. Also we’re booking a table at the Lifeboat sat PM.

For those wanting to come if you haven’t already just reply to the thread so we can get an idea of attendees.

Rafiki, what time will you intend on being back from the cycle ride and I can book in a table at a suitable time for us all.
