New pontoons added at Wells

In the last few days the pontoons at Wells have been extended. Presume it is now easier for deeper draft boats to stay afloat. The new pontoon extends towards the old sailing barge.

Having been in and out a few times, including leaving in the dark at 5am on a late November morning, I would not be too concerned about the speed of the tide. It has never been that fast.

There is an Easterly tidal stream that sets in around high water-ish (check before entering) running at 90degrees to the entrance. It would set you on Bob Hall's sandbank if you lost power. In calm conditions it is a very easy entrance but I would not recomend entering in the dark for the first time unless you can follow a fishing boat (and do 10 knotts to keep up).

Any forumite who does not know their high water from their low water should ring the harbour master.

When visiting by car last year I spoke to the harbourmaster about depth for my 1.7m. He said the only spot was alongside the barge restaurant where you would get covered in bird poo. Lets hope the new pontoons have the depth without the poo.

it all ties in with the plan to "plough" the entrance to wells harbour,the eventual aim is to have access at all hights of tide,its estimated that once the entrance is ploughed,the harbour will scour.

I think this is why what used to be a clear water mark was changed to a red, to ensure you go round the red on approach from the east ie to avoid the sand bank.
