New Owner: in or out during next winter?

As it is, the Sports cruiser was wrong in every way..................
I just wish somebody had told us what we now know.................

You only had to ask the 99% of forumites who have been down this well trodden road before you.

Soap dish sports cruisers are wobbly,blown off course if a butterfly flaps its wings,have less accomodation that a matchbox,you risk going swimming everytime you need to go forward on them curvy non existant side decks,no stantions,no proper cleats/bollards and always but always ....OGM..... outdrives ...... :):):)

Thread title....

OOOoo--eeeeerrr!!....All I did was ask about leaving the boat in or lifting out in the winter. Now we have Germans massing at the borders of Austria :-)

So.....(rubs chin).....now that we've been successfully blown off-course...should I throw one in about Champagne, Gin or Beer as a sundowner?....LOL

Its fascinating for a newbie....first I saw the cracks between cruisers and sail/rowers....then the marina cliques......then the jeans vs blazer and white trousers....now cruisers vs caravans.....English vs American (that's forgiven)hmmm......starting to flush out the complexities of this simple group who want to enjoy the river......LOLOL

Interesting times ahead.....

Oh that's an easy one :-)

As an aesthete I think they should absolutely be stowed whilst 'at sea', and insist that they are of uniform shape, design and colour when in use. Anything less would be an outrgae to my eyes and an insult to the beauty of the Thames.

As a lazy b*stard, I say leave 'em hanging and to hell with the colour/shape/size....whatever is easiest. Since I will have a crew of naked Nubian slaves (as opposed to you boaty types), I will have far more important things on my mind :-)

Nope.

It's quite simply a case of Horses for Courses.

If I was on the coast, and needed a high speed planing boat to get places fast, I wouldn't have the 'Caravan' as you so pathetically put it.

Lets be fair, in Estuaries and coasts, A to B ability is of primary importance, as you aren't going to sleep once you have left the Marina!

However, on the Upper Thames, with a 5mph limit, one needs something that can waft along with virtually no wake at all, steer straight while you make a cup of tea, offers comfortable and spacious accommodation for ones guests, and offers the ability to stay aboard on a self sufficient basis for a week or two, without refuelling, or worrying about electric power, or water/ waste tanks.

In other words, not better, nor worse, just different.

It is a wonderful indication of sport Cruiser owners level of intelligence that they all seem to jump to the wrong conclusion when this matter is being discussed, which is why so many fools try and use these things between Oxford and Windsor.

I could understand having one at Penton Hook, with the Tidal River being so close, and all that entails, but Reading?

As I said people, Training shoe at a Garden party....No, No and No.

Feel free to ignore me or argue, but I have been there, and realised how foolish the whole thing was. In fairness, I had plans to take the Rio around to the coast, but failed to realise how far it was, and what it entailed!

I do just wonder if we might start seeing shiny track suits and Nike on the Great Lawn one day soon. Even a colleague, whose son is at Eton, admits that he is being coerced into 'brands' in order to ensure his son remains 'on par' in his dorm....

From a literal perspective, I imagine we'd all be driving Rovers and Trabants if appropriateness were the sole criteria. Fortunately that's not the case...and we are all free to choose what suits our lifestyles and budgets......as well as our emotional urges....

........jeez.....I didnt think it wasnt going to get quite so contentious so quickly....time to polish my cannon, as they say :D

Ad hominem attacks are generally an indication of paucity of argument. Is it any wonder that this forum can be terribly off-putting at times especially for those of us not endowed with a Y chromosome?

We are all incredibly lucky to be able to indulge our passion for being on the water so how about we celebrate that in an inclusive way and allow for the fact that we all have different tastes, abilities and circumstances. Oranges are not the only fruit.

New guy comes along asking for all kinds of advice, and yet nobody seems to want to suggest the boat could have been better chosen?

And only the other Sportcruiser owners seem to attack the idea, which is one of sound advice.

When his wonderful days out are marred by people shouting 'WAAKE' and he's tired of trying to keep the thing in a straight line for hour after hour, with little hope of doing much Tidal work because he's at the wrong end of the River, will he realise there is an option?

Nobody else gives a hoot!

As I said, I bought an almost identical boat from the very same place, and moored at the same Marina. Wished I hadn't chosen the Boat...
 
Well I had a great 4 years with my sealine 255 sports cruiser. I learnt how to reverse and moor a light sterndrive boat in nasty wind, I managed to sleep in it for a week on many occasions, devising simple recipes to cook on my two burner hob
