New Motorsailer.

Yes you have a handsome craft,IthinkI was tending toward a boat to be more at anchour farting about with scraping varnish and having cups of tea😏
I'll take the be more at anchor bit, but I'll be sipping a nice cool rosé, not farting around with varnish, thank you very much. At may age and level of laziness, the less wood on a boat, at least on the outside, the better.

Talking about windows low down in the hull I remember on a nic 32 waves slamming into the side windows occasionally in a blow and worrying about the slamming noise they made. Then the other week there was a new Bavaria 52? Alongside With windows right down low just above the water line in the bow. They must be bullet proof glass and built in to the hull. I recon they would be under water most of the time in a blow.
No thanks
I do worry about windows and being hit by tonnes of water, and you don't need to be far offshore to face the risk. But as you say there are some well rated ocean crossers with surprisingly large cabin windows. My greatest fear with hull windows in heavy weather would be the effect of hours of flexing on the window hull join. You can use bulletproof glass but it needs a bonding system that matches the flexing characteristics of the hull. Or perhaps it's the hull that is the weak spot..! Or perhaps modern hulls don't flex.

No doubt the material technology has progressed well beyond my understanding.

Quite right.

After our very pretty Island Packet 350 with lots od teak, we certainly dont miss the graft keeping it up.

The SP Cruiser has 4 small teal steps, easily cleaned and left natural.

I have said this before, but hull windows that are just bonded are causing leaks. At the Southampton Boat Show in 2021, I chatted with the Fairline agent for the South of France and leaking hull windows were their largest warranty problem by far and he said many other manufacturers had similar problems. High tech bonding does not seem to allow for sufficient movement due to hull flexing and it looses adhesion. The only proper solution is a mechanical fixing of bolts, but this destroys the clean look of bonded windows. My fear is if this a problem in a warranty period, what is it going to be like in decades to come. Will leaking windows become a major survey problem?

First Mate and I are fortunate in having a spacious, comfortable and seaworthy up to date Motorsailer, the Island Packet SP Cruiser MK1. She is getting on a bit now, we have used her hard for the last eight seasons, living aboard most summers and averaging 2,000 NM's per season. She still looks great and is a credit to the guys who built her in Florida.

Island Packet are building a newer version. Our model was followed by a MK2, bigger rear cockpit and slightly different layout.

Just put on youtube is the new owners of Island Packet giving a tour of the 42 Foot Motor Sailer mock up. Very impressive. Massive storage, up to date features and practical features.

Like all boats, it will have compromises, but it looks pretty good to me.

Our older model has features we really like, like side by side seating at the helm. The new one has two heads instead of a single 'Jack and Jill' type with access from both cabins. Not really sure two heads are neccessary.

Take a look and see what you think.

Many Motor Sailers are quite old fashioned. I am looking forward to seeing a new one in the flesh sometime.

Never be able to afford one though.

Come to think of it, that is EXACTLY what we said about the one we have...................................... ;)
I've just signed up as a new member as thinking of looking at 'Jarrow Lilly'. I would like to discuss some aspects of her with you if possible but I can't message you directly on this platform. Please let me know if you are willing to be contacted directly. Kindest regards, John.

Albatross 42.1. Owners version with 2 cabins, 1 head, long hardtop, inside helm etc. Originally done for me in 2016 in Spain, at Albatross Yachts. Beautifully designed modern DS yachts. Looks similar to Moody 41 DS, but it is quite different yacht.
