Brilliant reply; Welcome to the best sailing forum; this is the place to get excellent advice from people with a lot of yachting and sailng experience, also, this is the place that dogmatism can prevail. What boat do you have?

Thanks to a laptop with a browser window open on the ybw site being on board an Anderson 22 as it hit exactly 76.47 kts running from a violent storm (in relative comfort), the development of the politics and humour of some members of the forum has been propelled back to 1953....

We haven't bought one yet. Still searching but getting closer. I have never sailed, hubby has recently completed his day skipper and will be sailing with our son. Initially he will be sailing in the UK to get more miles and experience. I am planning to stay home and visit weekends. The plan is for him to do this for a year or so, we then hope to go to the med for a while, say 6-8 months of the year. Of course all this will depend on whether I take to it, if not I will be clocking up the air miles visiting him lol.

Ah!........you need to apply yourself its aknot that involves rabbits coming out of holes..certainly if you can make a bowline you will be gaining brownie ponts.

Welcome and fingers crossed you get on with sailing as it's a fantastic pursuit where you never stop learning. If time / budget / practicality permits you could consider getting on the Day Skipper course yourself. You won't be far behind him indoors and the more people that know a bit about what they are doing on board the less stress for everyone in my experience.

Welcome from me too - and don't mind the loonies :)

I agree with this - a recent beginner trying to teach a complete beginner is often a recipe for stress all round, resulting in the newer half deciding this is not for them. Which is sad :)

Welcome 'Herindoors'....

I do hope you have some happy experiences on board - and that needn't be on your own boat - sufficient to bring you back for more. I'd recommend you don't worry at all about learning 'how to do it' until you decide for yourself that you want to. Concentrate instead, IMHO, on persuading the boys to take you sailing somewhere warm, gentle, scenic - and with a decent restaurant-with-facilities at the end of each day., where a girlie can get clean and fresh, wash 'n dry hair, etc., ready for the pleasure of dining on a terrace in the sunset, looking down at your own boat, and knowing you don't have far to wander to reach the clean sheets/duvet....

That sounds to me like a bareboat or flotilla charter, and you could explore those ideas both online and by visiting the London Boat Show.....
