What would be nice IMO is a HH with a detachable antenna and adapter to fit the masthead antenna.

I connect all my Yaesu Vertex radios to fixed antennas at home and afloat. The antenna should unscrew. You might need to items to connect each with a BNC connection to connect the items together.
I am looking at getting a new handheld as my installed radio has finally failed.
The two I am considering is the Cobra HH125 and the Standard Horizon HX300. Apart from the fact that the HX300 is waterproof and the HH125 is splash proof does anyone have any feelings on these radios.
The pbo article on them both recommended the Cobra on price and the Standard Horizon on it being waterproof. Both appear to have the same features and operating ranges.

Any experiences or problems with either would be greatly appreciated.

The HX300 is the better of the two in my opinion and have had both. The HX 300 can be used with the boat antenna using an adaptor and the range is fine in this configuration. The range with its own antenna is not as good as some older Vertex radios but certainly a few miles. The antenna adaptors can be made up from items obtained form electronic teccies and companies like Martin Lynch employ people who know what they are talking about so a phone call to them might find the right components as you may need two items.

Was that with or against the tide?
Pleased you had a signal inside but apart from query I had on registering to get the MMSI mine has brilliant in the garden. Sadly as I cross the Solent just now I forgot to bring it with me to check out its features at sea while someone else drives the ferry but will remember next time.

HX 890E looks good - I'm tempted - I like the option of 12v charging - got a Cobra 150 but it's pretty useless, bought new batteries earlier this year but they seem to run down very quickly, even when switched off- perhaps something running in the background to flatten the battery? It worked OK last coming back from Holland as I discovered the m/h antenna had disappeared... and using the Cobra contacted SYH easily. Might visit Seamark Nunn next week.

I've had the previous and similar model, the HX870E, for about 5 years and it's been excellent. I just wired the charging cradle to a spare switch on the 12v distribution board, and it charges easily.

i had the cobra, and its... shite..

i only had it as a back up to communicate with bridge opening / harbour master / etc when in close range while at the helm shorthanded, for that it was adequate i guess, an example of its range is ~1 nautical mile before what you transmit turns to garbage, within 1/2 mile you will have some decent clarity but that's its limit in my experience

That said....its battery life is bloody fantastic.... but then again it hardly picks anything up!

also i wouldnt worry about the Cobra being only splash proof you will bin it long before it gets wet. i.e dont buy one.
Brilliant review ?

The one to avoid is the self discharging I com -even if you turn them off they self flatten and the equivalent to the standard horizon is grossly over priced. Who builds a radio wher you have to remove its battery after use apart from icom.

Fully waterproof is essential. I have a Standard Horizon 500XE submersible handheld, which I have had for many years. It has been in the oggin on numerous occasions - once for several hours. It still works fine. My previous cheapo got a bit wet in the bottom of the rubber dinghy once, and died totally. Go for fully waterproof - OK, it will cost a bit more, but do you want one that will work when you need it, or do you want one that will let you down when you need it?
