Curious as to whether anyone bought a Spade or Rocna or similar over winter? and how they have performed in anger? or perhaps you have crewed on a boat with one?

No need to reply if you didnt buy one/havent used one!!!

Cheers

Richard

Yes. Second season with one.

So far impressed.

Bought as CQR never really wanted to bury itself in a sandy area I regularly frequent. New one has buried itself first time every time so far.

I've had Spades for 5 years. Very happy.

Don't particularly recommend the alu one - doesn't cut into a hard bottom so well and the hollow shank is a problem. Not sure they even still make it. However it makes an excellent kedge.

However the steel one has been great as the main anchor. It doesn't like short scope (does any anchor?) but has been reliable in all but thick weed, for which I keep a fisherman.

crewed with a manson supreme earlier this year. the owner was very happy with it and i saw no problems with it. set first time every time on the half dozen times it was deployed.

Bought a galvanised generic Spade type very cheaply at a £1 Shop in Wadebridge Cornwall, since my CQR had let me down several times. I now use the cheap Spade every time, except in thick weed where, like Jeremy, I keep a fisherman.

Yes - Spade on previous boat, Rocna on current boat. Both excellent, went for Rocna this time due to price and the fact that the Rocna is one piece (not two as in Spade). The Rocna is fantastic, it really does set instantly - at least each time I've used it so far.

I bought a Rocna at LIBS 18 months ago.It holds really well.In an area which is known to be dodgy(The Rocks on the Deben)once I had it set(2 goes due to lots of pipeweed) It was hard to break out.It sets quicker than the previous Delta.I have a 10Kg on a Moody 31.I wanted better holding for no increase in anchor weight.

Hi Richard,

after two seasons with Rocna we have had the first everexperience of difficulties anchoring at the beginning of June: in deep kelp off St Mawes. It took us four attempts before we found a non-weedy patch. Otherwise it has been superb.

Replaced a CQR with a Manson - just finishing 3 months on W coast of Scotland with lots of anchoring.

Been very pleased with it on the whole - normally held first time - worst has been 3 attempts in thick kelp - came up with half a forest attached until mangaed to get through it.

CQR used to hold OK once it was in - but used to have a fair few goes to get it in sometimes.

Bought my ROCNA about 18 months ago and have used it a lot since. It is a 15kg used with 40m of chain on a Vancouver 28.

It sets very quickly and usually brings up a generous sample of the bottom when weighed. The photo shows the setting trench of around a metre on a sandy bottom in benign conditions.

Although it sits just fine in my bow roller the ROCNA has a narrower deeper shank than the CQR it replaced which means I can't use the standard securing pin. Instead I simply lash the ROCNA in place when on passage. This arrangement has worked well including on our Atlantic crossing when we took quite a bit of green water over the bow.

I'm a satisfied customer.

Three yesrs with a Spade follwing 11 years with a CQR. Both OK, Spade sets first time, CQR usually needed a few goes. Now a Spade fan.

Spade even set first time in Studland Bay where the CQR always had trouble.

I have 25kg Bugel cpoy wich is OTT for my boat but sets and holds beautifuly and a 12 kg Rocna copy wich is outstanding.I made these two in order to save a bit but it's so much work it's not really worth it.

The Rocna website has an article that is rather critical of the Manson Supreme, in that it is a) a copy of their anchor, and b) has design and construction flaws http://www.rocna.com/boat-anchors/manson-supreme-anchor.php. I'd be interested to know whether you can confirm or refute any of these assertations (will probably buy one or the other myself shortly)

I went through this exact same decision (Manson / Rocna). Plumped for the Rocna in the end, the article above does highlight some of the weaker areas of the Manson re build quality etc. Whether the points about copying designs etc are true I can't say - but I'm sure Craig will be along soon to put us straight!

The Manson was slightly cheaper when I weighed it all up, but for various reasons I plumped for the Rocna.

I bought a Manson Supreme.

Not had a days bother with anchoring ever since (2 years) where as the CQR I had usually took 2 or 3 goes to set. It is now a garden ornament - there is no place for unnecessary weight on a boat!

Yup. I have a ROCNA. used it first time last weekend. set solid as a rock! and would agree with previous comment, "can't use the locking pin on the bow roller". But does not seem to matter, locks well enough simply hauling back, though for long trips/heavy seas would also lash down (or stow in locker)

Well - not having a Rocna - I can't directly compare. They do look similar - but not identical.

To be honest - I set out to buy a Rocna - but at the time there was no UK importer (which I undertsand has now changed)- and so I'd have to buy from the continent at vast expense and hassle. Then discovered I could have a Manson delivered the next day for much less money and no hassle.

So for me the article on the Rocna site which I had read - was actually rather reassuring in that it seemed mainly focussed on how the Manson was a copy of the Rocna and therefore performed in much the same way. Yes there was a slight question mark over using slightly cheaper production methods - but then you were paying a lot less.

If I had to choose now - I'd probably go for the Manson - as its cheaper and works for me. If the Rocna had been available in the uK when I bought the Manson - I might have bought the Rocna - even though it was a fair bit more expensive.

The cheaper construction (from memory) didn't seem to suggest that the anchor would fail catastrophicaly - simply that the edge might blunt more quickly. Though to date - from 3 months failry heavy use I can see no sign - but appreciate thats not really a very long test
