Metcheck are currently writing a brand new section to the website dedicated to sailors for the inshore waters of the UK.

The new forecasts will provide a detailed look at the next 48 hours with Beaufort wind information, sea state and forecast plus a look into the next 10 days.

If you are a sailor then please feel free to send us your feedback to the new area so that we can continue to bring new ideas to your part of the site. Weather 4 Sailors will launch Monday afternoon.

Metcheck did not get this up and running until this morning. Quite a useful site - especially for the longer term planning. All the synoptic charts are available as well. (under Data)

Had a look a the site, charts are pretty (if lacking in detail as to when they were compiled) but weather data a bit wooly, I mean the whole south east from Christchuch to Harwich ( Sea-areas; Portland, Wight, Dover and Thames) only has one wind direction!
Pretty but really just a toy, can't see any sailor with any sense using it to plan a passage, sorry.
Just re-invents a slightly less round wheel.

Re: wow! 30 days forecast

I have been following this web site for a year now. It has developed hugley since its launch. I have also been impressed by the accuracy of the general trends on their 30 day forecasts. Got our August holiday in Brittany dead right - using Cornwall as an area.

They are always receptive to new ideas and occaisionally put new software up for test. Some months back they put up a european forecast for trial.

Yes - I agree - I never use it for short term weather, but it has proved usefull for longer term planning. They were remarkabley good last summer looking 2 weeks ahead. Lets email them and tell them what we want.

At first glance this appears to be just what I have been looking for; an easy to understand medium (next weekend) & long(ish) range forecast.

I shall monitor it with interest, thanks for the tip off.

Perhaps I was a bit harsh, I have just never trusted long range forecasts so I sort of skipped over that bit.
Don't recant on the short term forecast, needs a lot more detail.

Yes you were!!!!

If you believe that there is some science in forecasting, its worth giving these boys a chance. All the autumn gales were forecasted accurately at least 2 week before. Not sure how they do it - The result of following their forecasts is that I cancelled plans to sail back from southern brittany - planned for the week ending 30th October as they forecast storm conditions - how right they were. Boats still down there for the winter now!

I agree - its no replacement for a 2 or 3 day forecast.
