Pantaneus want me to have in-date flares before they will insure me for bimbling around the Ionion. Since I clearly can't buy them here in UK and carry them to Preveza I'll have to buy them locally - are these difficult to obtain? I've never looked.

If you're in one of the Preveza yards the chandlers in the yards will happily sell you parachute, floating red smoke and handheld red flares. The last will probably be Greek ones which you ignite with match composition on the flare cap: they also have a printed disposal instruction on them telling you to dump it at sea when time expired.....

They are also a lot cheaper :)

Dead easy - just go to the nearest chandlers - you can get UK, or Italian made ones or Greek ones, the latter being extremely cheap.
The PP in some ports in the Aegean, were inspecting people's flares and forbidding them from leaving until they had in-date ones during 2013 - more significantly they were inspecting fire-extinguishers and UK ones with no expiry/inspection dates were being rejected.
