New Engine for \"ACHILLES 9m\"

I hope to re-engine my "Achilles 9m" this winter with approx 20HP inboard.
The 20hp BETA looks good on paper. Would appreciate any advice re other options, eg YANMAR, VETUS, etc.
Any other ACH.9 Owners experience with re-engine would be great. Many thanks & Happy seafaring, Gerry-in-Ardglass

What are you taking out?

First thing worth looking at is access to vital parts of engine, and footprint of engine to see if they suit the current bed.

I've heard that Beta can supply adapters that will allow it to fit as a drop-in replacement for various other brand engines. I dont know anybody that's done it though, but might be worth checking with a dealer.

Re: New Engine for \"ACHILLES 9m\"

I re-engined my Achilles 9M with a Yanmar 2GM20 (18Hp) - second-hand. Straight-forward to do - mine has a metal engine frame bolted to the hull - I had some angle-iron welded on to raise the bed height. Old engine was a Sole diesel 9Hp.

I used a chain hoist on the boom to get the engines in/out - using halyard for topping lift.

The new engine mounts I was supplied with are far too stiff, giving more vibration than necessary into the hull, but overall, the change was a success. The extra Hp certainly changes the engine from an in/out of harbour auxillary to a relaxed passage-maker when necessary.

I fitted a new three-bladed prop (bigger) - it was towards the limit of Hp for the propshaft, apparently (3/4"), and a new flexible coupling - no problems so far.

If any more info required, please ask.

Re: New Engine for \"ACHILLES 9m\"

I have experience of having to re-engine 3 boats (Westerly Longbow, Great Dane 28 & a Monsun 31). All replacement engines were Beta, and co-incidentally replaced old Volvo MD somethings.
All very strainght forward, Beta supply new mounts to fit some old engine footprints.

I like the Beta 'cos all the bits you need (e.g. dipstick, filters & impeller) are at the front of the engine.

just a very satisfied customer.......

Many Thanks, Guys

The current engine is the original YANMAR YSB8, 29 years old, and still runs like a sewing machine but not strong enough in any kind of moderate sea conditions.
