Thought it was time as they were of an unknown age and one was starting to leak....
As I don't have a puller of sufficient cojones I got someone to do it....and boy, was it past its best.

Also took the opportunity to replace the anodes and antifoul, the jetwash took off more than I expected.

A job which I must admit I found too much for me now and don't think I'll do it myself again....

Thanks to Kevin at Kent Marine Services for doing the work and SML Paints for a terrific service with the Antifoul.

Thanks Fred, where were you returning from, good turnout by RCC...

End of the season goodbye to old Commodore and .....refreshments in the clubhouse.
Another sailpast for new commode in Oct and ...refreshments in the clubhouse.

That weekend weather looks too good to waste and tides right.
Hoping to either go up to Allington or down to Queenborough ATL and pub dinner in the Admirals Arm.

Deep Sea Seals rely on the natural spring for the rubber when compressed to return its original shape. Ie the spring in the rubber holds the water out.

I had a pair of DSS in my boat when I bought it about 7 years old. I drew the shafts to replace cutless bearings and to inspect the stern seal. The DDS were glazed in appearance, hard and would not return to their original shape and when you pulled them they cracked.

I replaced the Deep Sea Seals with Tides Marine seals which are a far superior design, much easier to fit , can have a spare replacement seal fitted on the shaft for use without releasing the coupling. Where I work we fit Tides Marine Seals as the default seal where possible, and they are very good.

All I can say is the originals were of unknown age and the face of the static seal was badly grooved, the rotating part looked OK and had no cracking and still retained its elasticity.
They have a recommended life of five years and it will be interesting to see how they go.

Original ones on buying the boat where completely worn out, rubber on rubber. Found out the water supply was blocked with scale and disintegrated anode.
New ones fitted 7 and half years ago with about 2/3 life left and have done about 1000 hours.
I was warned that if I stayed in the Medway / Thames area they would only last about 5 years due to silty water, moved to south coast 5 years ago.
