new cuddy/cupboard top for open boat-- how to fill joint at capping?

i want to make a simple plywood cuddy/cupboard for a small open boat------problem----the capping on the gunwales is 50 mm wide----it has a fall of approximately 9 mm from the inside to the outside---if i lay the plywood on top i have a 9 mm gap i need to fill----i was thinking of epoxeing a strip of plywood to the gunwale then planeing it level------never planed plywood----do you think this would work------marine-plywood from robbins timber so should be good quality

Better off with proper hardwood,although ply is straight forward to plane......with a sharp plane !

It sounds, from your initial description, that you are planning to plane the ”top” of the ply. If so that’s not a good idea as you will break through and expose the laminates. Even with good ply that is a potential recipe to soak up water. If you do that then you need to epoxy it at a minimum or ideally sheath it in a woven roving.

thanks for reply W----proper hardwood would be better but very expensive to cut curves out of wide boards----i will have a lot of ply wood left after cutting the top for the cuddy----- i would buy new blades for my electric planer and sharpen my hand planes----unfortunately i haven t got a piece of proper marine ply to practice on -----hence the question

Well if not in hardwood ,pine would do maybe in two pieces to make the curve,but as H Ackerman says epoxy to seal ply.

hi H---thats exactly what i was thinking of doing-----i would cap the capping then plane it down to get rid of the 9mm gap -----would use expoxy to try and give it a good water seal--- don t know what else to try---a 9mm gap is surely to big to fill with thickened epoxy
