Fussy friend absolutely has to change the very slightly manky cooker on his new to him boat.
Has been quoted 450 pounds for usual 2 burner/grill and oven.
Any thing cheaper out there?

PBO did a team test of several cookers [see PBO Feb 2002].
The Taylors 041 was the "Team Choice" but at £1480 [in 2002!] not a very realistic buy for mere mortals. "Best Value" was the Plastimo Neptune 2000 at £500.
Going by the photos, the best toast was produced on the SMEV [£650].

We have had two Nelson Spinflo models. The first replaced an aged ( and possibly dangerous) Flavel Vanessa that was original kit on our Sadler 29. We were so satisfied that we bought another Spinflo to replace the "resident" cooker on the new boat. As with most things, you get what you pay for and the cheaper jobbies are prone to corrosion, often have sharp edges and flimsy oven door catches. Kit like the Taylors looks wonderful and will probably last forever but the idea of taking out a second mortgage does not appeal! Do shop around and talk to your installer ( make sure its a Corgi man) and there should be some deals around.

We've just been through this and bought a Spinflo Nelson. Space is critical for us and the Spinflo is built to replace the Flavel Vanessa which is not the widest of cookers at 450mm. If space isnt an issue and cost doesn't matter have a look at some of the force 10 ones.

was in dickies of pwllheli the other day. two burner eno with a big grill £99 i thought they had missed a number somewhere but mike said that was correct. special offer only be quick

I couldnt afford the one SWMBO wanted and after a long search ended up with a Techimpex. Quality control is not great (rejected two) but if you are prepared to be obnoxious, its a pretty good cooker for the money.

ENO and Force Ten are pretty much the higher quality cookers. Then relegate any thoughts of Plastimo as they're just poor quality (IMHO), the SMEV cookers are the highest quality you'll get on a budget. 450 for a two burner with grill sounds reasonable, who's the manufacturer? I deal with cookers everyday spare parts, warranty etc... my top 3 cookers, in order are Eno (quality, reliability and design), SMEV (value for money) then Force Ten (quality) I hope this helps

Definitely second the Nelson Spinflo. Also bought ours to replace the Flavell Vanessa and it's superb. SWMBO and me couldn't be more delighted!

I got a slightly more than "slightly manky" cooker on my boat when I bought it last year - an original Flavel Vanessa. Lighting it turned the pots black, and threatened to set fire to the boat.
After looking around and seeing prices, I got new ring burners, grill, jets and oven burners from www.gasonspares.co.uk for a fraction of the cost of a new cooker- I believe Calor marine shop also do spares for some cookers.

depends on how manky or "not swanky" it is though...

hello
did he buy the 305 statesman, if so is the hob & oven original, would he sell them if i could clean and repair them.
thanks
Shane

We've had two ENO's; the second replacing a faulty one. The second one - bit's fell off and the inner oven door shattered. Can't recommend them.

Hi Aidan,

Yes, I'd got spares from caravan shops/Calor etc over the 21 year life of the Vanessa, but although it was in a clean and usable condition (we sold it very cheaply to a delighted young chap) we wanted something less prone to rust and with flame failure on all burners.

Having also used the Vanessa full time cruising for seven years, it was due a rest, and the annual stripping down to combat the creeping rust, was becoming a pain.

So we looked at just about every cooker from the horrendously priced F10s to real cheapies and shortlisted 3 or 4. Of these, the reputation, build quality and price (still a hell of a lot!!) of the Nelson Spinflo offered the best value.

We've only used it locally (Brittany/south coast) for one season so far, but we bought it with a mind to get away long-term cruising again this year - so fingers crossed!

BTW, makes excellent toast, a primary requirement on our boat!!!

I have a Techimpex on the boat I have just purchased. Having taken it apart to fix the mountings I have to say that I am not very impressed by its construction. The only use of stainless is what you can see on the outside. It is only 2 years old and there is already significant corrosion. Everything is very lightly constructed and there are many poorly finished sharp edges. Not good and certainly not worth £400 of my money if I was buying new. Just about the only good thing about it is that the flame failure devices appear to work, but given the quality of the rest of it I think I will test them regularly.

A guy was selling brand new Parker x2 bruner/grill/oven on Ebay a few months ago. Stainless steel shell with flame failure devices throughout.
The only downside was the lack of gimbal fittings and panholders... but the Plastimo set fits as the Parker is the same width as the Neptune.
Made in Italy. I paid £140 for mine.

Re: Techimpex measurements pls.

I have been looking at the Techimpex as a replacement, Is anybody able to help with the height of the cooker from the base to the level where the pans rest . It has to fit under a removable cover, and do the pan holders come off .
Thanks in anticipation.

Matt

Er No well sort umm.As it happens he paid a deposit on a Corniche, but due to an interesting survey has just got his deposit back and will be backing looking at the Sealine at the weekend.

Hi JerryAt, I'd read some of the old threads about cookers when looking into the possibility of replacing it. It seems the Spinflo has a good reputation, and fits the vanessa size. Looks a nice bit of kit too (saw it on the calor gas marine shop site). Having said that, our Flavel despite being *rotten* inside (the gas components), is quite clean and solid cosmetically, so we're happy with the result. (Havnt used in anger yet though).

btw. ta for the tips on many other threads...

regards,
Aidan.
