It's time for new carpets on Blackfeather.

Loads of questions

Any recommendations for Poole area and also what would be a reasonable price for two pieces, cut to shape (fiddly), one of about 1.2m x 1.2m and another similar?

What is the minimum standard/requirement for marine use ie to avoid mould/rot etc?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Have a look at the Flotex flooring range - depending on your use, it might be better than carpet. I fitted some in my Mitchel 2 years ago as the carpet was getting very fishy and grubby.. it looked pretty good IMO

I needed new carpets for my cockpit recently and was let down by a couple of marine based carpet companies who obviously thought that the job was too small.

Instead I called in to see a normal (house fitting) carpet company close to the marina and they were happy to work on the boat and had done this for other customers. They brought samples of appropriate carpet including flotex and bathroom carpet and the whole job was much cheaper than I could have hoped for. All professionally whipped at the edges and brilliant service.

Although they are not Poole based I suspect that a local carpet shop near to your marina will also do a good job.

Worth a try!

I tried that route and went to a carpet shop.. All the carpets had what looked like some type of latex backing which wouldn't hold up to getting wet too well and also it was easy to pull out of shape..

Glad you had a good experience with "house" carpet..

I am still debating what to do but the samples I got from marineflooring certainly look to be designed for the job being that they don't frey, hold their shape, moisture passes right through and they are apparently UV stabilised..

My carpet also stays dry most of the time (unless it is very lumpy) :)

The cockpit floor space is a fair size for me and I found it useful to break up the carpet into 3 sections - essentially like 3 rugs. Because I had them all whipped (by far the most expensive part of the process) they can be individually removed and stored down below (or dried in the sun) as necessary.

At a cost of +/- £200 I also worked on the basis that if I have to replace every few years it was still cheaper than many marine products and I will get nice new carpet and can change colour or improve design next time if I can see a way of improving.
