 Just found out how much a single 8' x 4' x 6mm Teak & Holly veneered sheet is going to cost me … eye watering €341 … phew think I'll just varnish some marine ply instead!!! The original cabin sole has been painted with grey deck paint unfortunately, I doubt that it would come off completely, so I was going to put a new one down instead…

Teak and holly is difficult to replicate but marine ply varnished to seal, then draw in lines with black marker pen further coats of varnish will replicate teak and ebony.

Now that sounds like a great idea! I was thinking of using black ink for the lines, but maybe a permanent marker would do the same. I'll have to try it out on some spare ply. Thanks!

Used to do the lines in Indian ink on my model sailing boats when a boy, but then they where very fine lines. Agree the price is eye watering, did my cabin sole with two sheets delivered to Jersey costing nearly £1000!

I was thinking of buying a sheet of marine ply (12mm), setting a router to 5mm depth and cutting shallow lengthwise channels in the ply. Carefully edge the channels with masking tape and fill with black Sikaflex alternative. Varnish over the lot, paint the back with epoxy. It might look great, or it might just snap when moved.

I did the above but after routing, applied one coat of varnish including in the grooves to prevent staining of the bare ply, then used waterproof tile grout for the for caulking and varnished over the lot with silver sand in the mix for slip proofing. 25 years later and it is still looking good! Cost - exterior ply at £12 per sheet (then) and about £2 for tile grout. Todays prices about £25 for exterior ply and £5 for grout.

So it should work then - brilliant, I thought it would look great but wasn't sure abut he strength of the ply post routing. I could maybe use it for headlining as well (at least on the cabin sides) but that would need to be 6mm or 9mm.

I used 6mm ply and cut the grooves to about half the depth and then glued it over the floor ply so no loss of strength.
