Can anyone help me locate a new bulb for my compass light? The only markings on the old one are MGG 12V. It’s one of those tiny things with two wires sticking out the bottom. MGG have a website but do not appear to have a UK supplier, or if they have they won’t tell me. Perhaps it's because I can’t speak German. The compass is a Mercur, made by C Plath, and dates from the late 80s.

I have never done it but I would think changing a light bulb for a led is a very good ider you will never have to do the job agian. led`s with the resistor built in for 12v can now be brought for pennies.

Maplins list some truly wire ended bulbs that would require soldering connections to. WQ13P and BT43W. (80mA, 60mA at 12 volts)

There are also some smal bulbs with wire connections designed to fit into a holder used in cars. At least my old Volvo has loads of them for panel illumination, seat belt catch illumination etc 2.2W IIRC

Also look at http://www.alampco.com/

Grain of wheat bulbs they are called ... used in Hornby railways and all sorts.

I've tried replacing mine with LED on my Plastimo Bulkhead job but light is just not strong enough to see anything. I even added another LED with it ... nope.

Maplins or radio spares shop should be able to identify equivalent replacement. Just be careful not to go higher wattage than original as non-led's get hot.

I replaced mine with new from Sirs (think it was Refueller who recommended) and it gives ample light - in fact, dimmer switches are also available though I haven't fitted one.

See photo.
